55 WHEREAS, Family and friends will long cherish their
66 memories of William McKinley Thacker Jr. of Wichita Falls, who
77 passed away on September 6, 2018, at the age of 94; and
88 WHEREAS, The son of Iva Wooten Thacker and William McKinley
99 Thacker Sr., Bill Thacker was born in Austin on March 13, 1924; he
1010 attended Wichita Falls High School and interrupted his education
1111 at The University of Texas at Austin to serve in the European
1212 theater during World War II; as a gunner with the Eighth Air
1313 Force, he flew 30 missions on a B-17; he received a Bronze Star
1414 with three oak leaf clusters, the Air Medal, and the
1515 European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, and on November
1616 11, 2016, he was awarded the French Legion of Honor; and
1717 WHEREAS, After the war, Mr. Thacker completed both his
1818 bachelor's degree in business administration and his law degree
1919 at The University of Texas at Austin, and he began his career as
2020 an assistant district attorney for Wichita County; in 1953, he
2121 married Jan Tydings, and they were blessed with three sons,
2222 Billy, Ty, and Jeff; that same year, Mr. Thacker also joined an
2323 oil and gas company, Fain and McGaha, where he developed a love of
2424 the industry and a strong sense of civic responsibility; in 1990,
2525 he and his son, Ty, established 3-T Exploration, and he served as
2626 its general counsel for the rest of his life; he was also the
2727 founder and principal owner of 5-T Properties, a family
2828 partnership; benefiting his profession, he was president of the
2929 North Texas Oil & Gas Association, and he served as vice
3030 president of the Texas Oil & Gas Association from 1972 until his
3131 death; and
3232 WHEREAS, Mr. Thacker shared a rewarding marriage of 49
3333 years with his first wife until her passing, in 2002; fortunate
3434 enough to find love a second time, he wed Pat Morrison in 2005,
3535 and with the passing years, his family grew to include five
3636 grandchildren, Thomas, Sadie, Kagen, Olivia, and McKinley, and a
3737 great-grandson, Tydings; a man of faith, Mr. Thacker served
3838 First United Methodist Church in numerous capacities; he was a
3939 leader in scouting as well, serving as president of the Northwest
4040 Texas Council of Boy Scouts of America, and in 2018, when he
4141 received the 50-Year Veteran Award, he was recognized as Chief
4242 Scout of the council; moreover, the main entrance to Camp Perkins
4343 was named Thacker Way in his honor; and
4444 WHEREAS, A kind, humble, and caring man, Bill Thacker was
4545 deeply devoted to his family, his community, and his country, and
4646 he is remembered with admiration and affection by all who were
4747 privileged to know him; now, therefore, be it
4848 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
4949 Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of William McKinley
5050 Thacker Jr. and extend sincere condolences to his loved ones;
5151 and, be it further
5252 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
5353 prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns
5454 this day, it do so in memory of Bill Thacker.
