11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 514
22 WHEREAS, The Judson High School girls' basketball team
33 closed out an unforgettable year in triumphant fashion by winning
44 the 2019 University Interscholastic League 6A state championship
55 on March 2 at the Alamodome; and
66 WHEREAS, After claiming the district crown during the
77 regular season, the Lady Rockets dispatched playoff foes Austin,
88 Northside O'Connor, Austin Westlake, and Laredo United High
99 Schools to reach the 6A Region IV final; prevailing 71-44 over
1010 Northside Clark High School, Judson earned its third consecutive
1111 trip to the state tournament in the UIL's highest classification,
1212 the first time a San Antonio-area team has done so; and
1313 WHEREAS, Determined to reverse the heartbreak of 2018,
1414 when their title bid fell short by just four points, the Judson
1515 players opened the 2019 state tournament with a 58-47 semifinal
1616 victory over Allen High School; the team then battled DeSoto High
1717 for the crown in a hard-fought contest that saw DeSoto take the
1818 lead in the third quarter; showing tremendous heart down the
1919 stretch, the Lady Rockets scored two clutch baskets and two free
2020 throws in the final two minutes to win by a final score of 49-46;
2121 with the victory, Judson became the first local school to claim a
2222 girls' basketball state championship; and
2323 WHEREAS, Judson was led by championship game Most Valuable
2424 Player Corina Carter, who scored 20 points, and she was joined on
2525 the 6A All-Tournament Team by Kierra Sanderlin and Kyra White;
2626 the Lady Rockets also received valuable contributions throughout
2727 the 2018-2019 campaign from the other members of the roster:
2828 Keanalei Aukuso, Jonmecia Baskin, Elena Blanding, Ziyya Brown,
2929 Teanna Huggins, Chriresha King, Elisha Mackey, Tiffany McGarity,
3030 and Tianna Rome; these dedicated athletes were ably guided by
3131 head coach Triva Corrales and assistant coaches Tosha Kennedy,
3232 William McKethan, and Tamara Torru, and the squad received vital
3333 support from director of athletics Ryanne DuPree; and
3434 WHEREAS, Winning a state championship represents the
3535 culmination of countless hours of hard work and an unwavering
3636 commitment to excellence, and the members of the Judson Lady
3737 Rockets basketball team will treasure the memory of this
3838 accomplishment for many years to come; now, therefore, be it
3939 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
4040 Legislature, hereby congratulate the Judson High School girls'
4141 basketball team on winning the 2019 UIL 6A state championship and
4242 extend to the team's players, coaches, and staff sincere best
4343 wishes for the future; and, be it further
4444 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
4545 prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the
4646 Texas Senate.
