1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 528
2	2	WHEREAS, Cystic fibrosis, commonly referred to as CF, is a
3	3	genetic disease that affects approximately 30,000 children and
4	4	adults in the United States and nearly 70,000 children and adults
5	5	worldwide, more than 2,000 of whom live in this state; and
6	6	WHEREAS, In persons with cystic fibrosis, a defective gene
7	7	causes the body to produce an abnormally thick, sticky mucus that
8	8	clogs the lungs, and these secretions produce life-threatening
9	9	lung infections; the secretions also obstruct the pancreas and
10	10	prevent its digestive enzymes from reaching the intestines to
11	11	help the body break down and absorb food; and
12	12	WHEREAS, More than 10 million Americans are symptomless
13	13	carriers of the defective CF gene, and this disease occurs in
14	14	approximately one of every 3,500 live births in the United
15	15	States; and
16	16	WHEREAS, The median predicted age of survival for a person
17	17	with cystic fibrosis born in 2017 was 46.2 years; and
18	18	WHEREAS, With advances in the treatment of CF, the number
19	19	of adults living with this disease has steadily grown, and
20	20	approximately 900 new cases of cystic fibrosis are diagnosed each
21	21	year; and
22	22	WHEREAS, More than 50 percent of the affected population is
23	23	18 years of age or older, and people with the disease have a
24	24	variety of symptoms attributed to the more than 1,800 mutations
25	25	of the CF gene; and
26	26	WHEREAS, Infant blood screening to detect genetic defects
27	27	is the most reliable and least costly method to identify persons
28	28	likely to have cystic fibrosis; and
29	29	WHEREAS, Early diagnosis of the disease permits early
30	30	treatment, which enhances the quality of life and longevity of
31	31	patients; the treatment of CF depends on the stage of the disease
32	32	and the organs involved; and
33	33	WHEREAS, Clearing mucus from the lungs is an important part
34	34	of the daily CF treatment regimen; other types of treatments
35	35	include taking pancreatic enzymes and inhaled antibiotics; and
36	36	WHEREAS, A critical component of treating patients with
37	37	cystic fibrosis is access to innovative treatments, which can
38	38	play a crucial role in the lives of patients with CF; and
39	39	WHEREAS, There are 11 world-class treatment centers in
40	40	this state which specialize in the diagnosis of cystic fibrosis
41	41	and the care of persons with CF; and
42	42	WHEREAS, Improving the length and quality of life for
43	43	people with CF starts with awareness; now, therefore, be it
44	44	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
45	45	Legislature, hereby designate the month of May 2019 as Cystic
46	46	Fibrosis Awareness Month in Texas.
