55 WHEREAS, Sports fans in the Lone Star State and beyond are
66 mourning the loss of Johnny "Lam" Jones on March 15, 2019, at the
77 age of 60; and
88 WHEREAS, Born in Lawton, Oklahoma, on April 4, 1958, John
99 Wesley Jones II moved to Texas with his family during his youth
1010 and distinguished himself as a track star and an All-State
1111 running back for the Lampasas High School Badgers; by the age of
1212 18, he was sprinting world-class times, and he gained
1313 widespread recognition with his legendary performance at the
1414 1976 state track meet; after winning the 100-yard and 220-yard
1515 dashes, he closed a gap of more than 40 yards during the anchor
1616 leg of the mile relay, passing the entire field and inspiring
1717 the crowd to swarm the track in excitement; the relay victory
1818 clinched the team championship for Lampasas High, and Mr. Jones
1919 would later reflect on that accomplishment as one of the most
2020 exciting experiences of his life; and
2121 WHEREAS, Later that summer, Mr. Jones competed in the 1976
2222 Summer Olympics in Montreal, becoming the youngest athlete from
2323 Texas to ever earn a berth on the United States track and field
2424 team; he won an Olympic gold medal as a member of the 4x100 relay
2525 team, which set a world record with a time of 38.33 seconds, and
2626 he also competed in the 100-yard dash, finishing sixth; and
2727 WHEREAS, Mr. Jones went on to a stellar career at The
2828 University of Texas at Austin; he ran track his freshman year,
2929 winning four events at the 1977 Southwest Conference meet and
3030 setting UT track records at 100 yards, 100 meters, and 220 yards;
3131 on the gridiron, he first played running back and then wide
3232 receiver for the Longhorns, earning All-American and
3333 All-Southwest Conference honors as well as the team Most Valuable
3434 Player award in 1978; it was during his time on the 40 Acres that
3535 he first became known as "Lam" Jones, a nickname bestowed by
3636 football head coach Darrell Royal in reference to Mr. Jones'
3737 hometown of Lampasas; and
3838 WHEREAS, A highly touted NFL prospect, this skilled
3939 athlete was drafted by the New York Jets in 1980 and signed the
4040 first contract worth more than a million dollars in league
4141 history; his pro career spanned eight years, but injuries
4242 limited his performance and playing time with the Jets, and he
4343 retired in 1987 after brief stints with the San Francisco 49ers
4444 and Dallas Cowboys; and
4545 WHEREAS, In recent decades, Mr. Jones dedicated himself to
4646 educating youth on the dangers of drugs and alcohol; he also
4747 became involved in the Lay Witnesses for Christ sports ministry,
4848 and he was a longtime supporter of the Special Olympics; in
4949 recognition of his remarkable athletic accomplishments, he was
5050 inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, The University of
5151 Texas Athletics Hall of Honor, the Texas High School Football
5252 Hall of Fame, and the Lampasas Football Hall of Fame; and
5353 WHEREAS, Widely considered one of the greatest athletes
5454 in Texas history, Lam Jones remains a source of great pride to
5555 the residents of Lampasas, and his many achievements will
5656 continue to be remembered and admired for years to come; now,
5757 therefore, be it
5858 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
5959 Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of Johnny Lam Jones
6060 and extend sincere condolences to his relatives and friends; and,
6161 be it further
6262 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
6363 prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns
6464 this day, it do so in memory of Johnny Lam Jones.
