44 Marcus Ledbetter Yancey Jr.
55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Marcus Ledbetter Yancey Jr., who died
77 November 16, 2018, at the age of 93; and
88 WHEREAS, Marcus Yancey was born on June 28, 1925, in
99 Austin; he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at the
1010 onset of World War II and was assigned to the Military
1111 Intelligence and Engineering School, where he earned a degree in
1212 civil engineering from Georgia Tech University; and
1313 WHEREAS, After serving as a staff intelligence officer in
1414 China, he returned to Austin and received a mechanical
1515 engineering degree from The University of Texas, where he was
1616 also a standout athlete on the baseball and swimming teams; a
1717 Southwest Conference champion, he was inducted into the
1818 University of Texas Swimming Hall of Fame in 1995; and
1919 WHEREAS, He worked in the private sector for a time before
2020 joining the Texas Highway Department, where he served with
2121 distinction for more than 35 years; he held a number of
2222 leadership positions in the department and served as assistant
2323 engineer-director and deputy executive director; and
2424 WHEREAS, Mr. Yancey was active in a wide range of public
2525 service organizations, including the Boy Scouts of America, the
2626 President's Council on Physical Fitness, and the Fellowship of
2727 Christian Athletes; he was a founder and coach of the Austin
2828 Aquatic Club and was twice named Coach of the Year by the American
2929 Swimming Coaches Association; and
3030 WHEREAS, He and his beloved wife of 65 years, the late
3131 Alice Jean Yancey, were blessed with four children, Marc, Debbie,
3232 Janis, and Tenley; his five grandchildren and seven
3333 great-grandchildren were a source of much pride and joy for
3434 him; and
3535 WHEREAS, A man of strength, integrity, and generosity, he
3636 gave unselfishly to others, and his wisdom and his enthusiasm for
3737 living each day to the fullest will not be forgotten; and
3838 WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather,
3939 and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by
4040 his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it
4141 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
4242 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4343 family of Marcus Ledbetter Yancey Jr.; and, be it further
4444 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4545 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4646 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4747 memory of Marcus Ledbetter Yancey Jr.
