5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |

6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of James Terrence Young, who died |
---|
7 | 7 | | October 1, 2018, at the age of 81; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Terry Young was born July 7, 1937, in Pampa, |
---|
9 | 9 | | Texas, and his family later settled in the Rio Grande Valley; he |
---|
10 | 10 | | distinguished himself as a skilled baseball player in his teenage |
---|
11 | 11 | | years, and he worked as a sportswriter and editor for three daily |
---|
12 | 12 | | papers while pursuing athletics in high school and in the years |
---|
13 | 13 | | that followed; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, A respected journalist, Terry transitioned from |
---|
15 | 15 | | sports writing to serving as a reporter and bureau manager for |
---|
16 | 16 | | United Press International in Texas and New Mexico; he was |
---|
17 | 17 | | published nationally and internationally, and his political work |
---|
18 | 18 | | included coverage of such legends as Lyndon B. Johnson, Ben |
---|
19 | 19 | | Barnes, John Connally, and a young George W. Bush; he was active |
---|
20 | 20 | | in several professional press groups, and he served as president |
---|
21 | 21 | | of Austin's Headliners Club in 1981; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, In addition to enjoying a rewarding journalism |
---|
23 | 23 | | career, Terry ventured into television as the cohost of Football: |

24 | 24 | | Southwest Conference Style, and he shared many of his life's |
---|
25 | 25 | | highlights in his published memoir, Stop the Train--The Bridge is |
---|
26 | 26 | | on Fire!; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Terry enjoyed more than 57 years of marriage with |
---|
28 | 28 | | his wife, June Winston, who was also an avid sports fan; they were |
---|
29 | 29 | | blessed with three children, and their six grandchildren and |
---|
30 | 30 | | great-grandchild were a source of immense pride and joy; in |
---|
31 | 31 | | September of 2018, the entire family traveled to Cooperstown, New |
---|
32 | 32 | | York, to visit the Baseball Hall of Fame; and |
---|
33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Terry Young was a keen-eyed observer, an engaging |
---|
34 | 34 | | storyteller, and a cherished friend to many; he will long be |
---|
35 | 35 | | remembered with respect and admiration by all who were privileged |
---|
36 | 36 | | to share in his life; now, therefore, be it |
---|
37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
---|
38 | 38 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
39 | 39 | | family of James Terrence Young; and, be it further |
---|
40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
41 | 41 | | his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
42 | 42 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
---|
43 | 43 | | memory of Terry Young. |
