55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of James Terrence Young, who died
77 October 1, 2018, at the age of 81; and
88 WHEREAS, Terry Young was born July 7, 1937, in Pampa,
99 Texas, and his family later settled in the Rio Grande Valley; he
1010 distinguished himself as a skilled baseball player in his teenage
1111 years, and he worked as a sportswriter and editor for three daily
1212 papers while pursuing athletics in high school and in the years
1313 that followed; and
1414 WHEREAS, A respected journalist, Terry transitioned from
1515 sports writing to serving as a reporter and bureau manager for
1616 United Press International in Texas and New Mexico; he was
1717 published nationally and internationally, and his political work
1818 included coverage of such legends as Lyndon B. Johnson, Ben
1919 Barnes, John Connally, and a young George W. Bush; he was active
2020 in several professional press groups, and he served as president
2121 of Austin's Headliners Club in 1981; and
2222 WHEREAS, In addition to enjoying a rewarding journalism
2323 career, Terry ventured into television as the cohost of Football:
2424 Southwest Conference Style, and he shared many of his life's
2525 highlights in his published memoir, Stop the Train--The Bridge is
2626 on Fire!; and
2727 WHEREAS, Terry enjoyed more than 57 years of marriage with
2828 his wife, June Winston, who was also an avid sports fan; they were
2929 blessed with three children, and their six grandchildren and
3030 great-grandchild were a source of immense pride and joy; in
3131 September of 2018, the entire family traveled to Cooperstown, New
3232 York, to visit the Baseball Hall of Fame; and
3333 WHEREAS, Terry Young was a keen-eyed observer, an engaging
3434 storyteller, and a cherished friend to many; he will long be
3535 remembered with respect and admiration by all who were privileged
3636 to share in his life; now, therefore, be it
3737 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
3838 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
3939 family of James Terrence Young; and, be it further
4040 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4141 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4242 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4343 memory of Terry Young.
