| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The strength and cohesion of our communities are |

| 3 | 3 | | enhanced by the devoted efforts of individuals such as Dr. Roger |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | I. Van Horn, whose tireless work has contributed immeasurably to |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | the quality of life in Nacogdoches; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, A native of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Dr. Van Horn |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | attended Nathan Hale High School and continued his education at |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | Westminster College; he went on to graduate from the University |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | of Missouri in 1970 with a degree in dentistry; and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Van Horn then joined the United States Army |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | and attained the rank of major while serving as an army dentist; |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | after leaving the military in 1975, he established a private |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | dental practice in Nacogdoches and served local residents for |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | nearly four decades before retiring in 2014; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, A dedicated champion of his community, Dr. Van |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Horn held the office of Mayor of Nacogdoches from 2007 to 2017; he |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | has also held leadership roles with the Nacogdoches County |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Chamber of Commerce, the Nacogdoches County Economic Development |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Corporation, the Nacogdoches Jaycees, and CASA of Deep East |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Texas; moreover, he helped establish the Heritage Heralds and the |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Nacogdoches Youth Soccer Association, and he ministers to |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | prisoners in Henderson; in recognition of his efforts, he was |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | named the Nacogdoches Citizen of the Year in 2013 and inducted |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | into the Nacogdoches Heritage Festival Hall of Fame in 2015; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Van Horn is the devoted father of two sons, |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Matthew and Jacob, and he also takes great pride in his four |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | grandchildren, Eloise, Ivan, Anna Everett, and Leo; and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Roger Van Horn has demonstrated a lasting |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | commitment to making Nacogdoches a better place for all, and in |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | so doing, he has earned the deep respect and appreciation of his |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | fellow residents; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Legislature, hereby commend Dr. Roger I. Van Horn for his |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | service to the Nacogdoches community and extend to him sincere |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | Dr. Van Horn as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
