2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Over the course of more than 75 years, the |

3 | 3 | | Bluebonnet Girls State Program, an initiative of the American |

4 | 4 | | Legion Auxiliary, has provided invaluable educational |

5 | 5 | | opportunities to the young women of our state; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Girls State program was created to teach high |
---|
7 | 7 | | school girls about the privileges and responsibilities of |
---|
8 | 8 | | American citizenship and to acquaint them with the workings of |
---|
9 | 9 | | our government through role-playing exercises; since its |
---|
10 | 10 | | inception in 1941, the program has grown from 94 participants to |
---|
11 | 11 | | more than 600; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Countless volunteers and supporters have |
---|
13 | 13 | | contributed to the success of the Bluebonnet Girls State Program |
---|
14 | 14 | | through the years; Frances Goff, who served as its volunteer |
---|
15 | 15 | | director from 1952 to 1994, had a great deal of influence on the |
---|
16 | 16 | | program, which under her leadership became a model for other |
---|
17 | 17 | | Girls State initiatives across the country; a host of influential |
---|
18 | 18 | | Texas women were Girls State citizens, including Governor Ann |
---|
19 | 19 | | Richards, Comptroller Carole Keeton Rylander, and Judge Bea Ann |
---|
20 | 20 | | Smith of the 3rd Court of Appeals; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, The Bluebonnet Girls State Program has offered a |
---|
22 | 22 | | unique learning experience that has fostered civic awareness and |
---|
23 | 23 | | engagement among many of our past, present, and future leaders, |
---|
24 | 24 | | and the achievements of its alumnae have made our state even |
---|
25 | 25 | | stronger and more prosperous; now, therefore, be it |
---|
26 | 26 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
---|
27 | 27 | | Legislature, hereby honor the Bluebonnet Girls State Program for |
---|
28 | 28 | | its more than 75 years of service and extend to all those |
---|
29 | 29 | | affiliated with the program sincere best wishes for continued |
---|
30 | 30 | | success; and, be it further |

31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
32 | 32 | | the Bluebonnet Girls State Program as an expression of the high |
---|
33 | 33 | | regard of the Texas Senate. |
