1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 607
2	2	WHEREAS, The University of Texas at San Antonio is
3	3	celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2019; and
4	4	WHEREAS, The university was created by the Texas
5	5	Legislature in 1969 with an enrollment of 670 graduate students
6	6	in its first class in 1973; and
7	7	WHEREAS, Through the collective efforts of Joe J. Bernal,
8	8	Franklin S. Spears, V. E. "Red" Berry, Wayne Connally, and Frank
9	9	Lombardino, the state legislature was inspired to create
10	10	UTSA; and
11	11	WHEREAS, As a proud member of The University of Texas
12	12	System, today UTSA has more than 32,000 students and some 132,000
13	13	alumni contributing to communities around the world; and
14	14	WHEREAS, UTSA brings national recognition to Texas through
15	15	its programs of distinction in cybersecurity, health, energy,
16	16	sustainability, and human and social development, as well as
17	17	rankings naming UTSA as the third most military friendly
18	18	institution in the country, the No. 1 Hispanic Serving
19	19	Institution in the country, and one of the top 100 young
20	20	universities in the world; and
21	21	WHEREAS, UTSA has been designated by the Texas Legislature
22	22	as an emerging research university and is on the fast track to
23	23	attaining National Research University Fund eligibility and the
24	24	highest research designation by the Carnegie Foundation for the
25	25	Advancement of Teaching; and
26	26	WHEREAS, UTSA is creating a collaborative and impactful
27	27	government-university-industry ecosystem in San Antonio through
28	28	its new National Security Collaboration Center--the first of its
29	29	kind in Texas--and is also building the state's first School of
30	30	Data Science; and
31	31	WHEREAS, UTSA is an inclusive institution where 50 percent
32	32	of students are the first in their families to attend college and
33	33	students from all backgrounds can thrive; and
34	34	WHEREAS, UTSA is a catalyst for change in San Antonio and a
35	35	driver of the city's knowledge economy and economic development,
36	36	acting as a prosperity engine for our state; and
37	37	WHEREAS, Since its founding, UTSA has transformed lives
38	38	and prepared young people to go out and change the world with a
39	39	steadfast commitment to driving opportunity, access, and social
40	40	mobility for Texas students; and
41	41	WHEREAS, UTSA has embodied the hopes and dreams of
42	42	generations for 50 years and will continue to do so for the next
43	43	50 and beyond; now, therefore, be it
44	44	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
45	45	Legislature, hereby honor The University of Texas at San Antonio
46	46	on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of its establishment and
47	47	extend to all those associated with this rising institution
48	48	sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further
49	49	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
50	50	prepared for the university as an expression of high regard by
51	51	the Texas Senate.
