11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 615
22 WHEREAS, Representatives from the City of San Marcos and
33 the San Marcos Area Chamber of Commerce and other community
44 businesses and organizations are gathering in Austin on April 25,
55 2019, to celebrate San Marcos Day at the State Capitol; and
66 WHEREAS, San Marcos is the county seat of Hays County and
77 is located 25 miles south of Austin, where the San Marcos River
88 rises from its many springs; the area has been a watering place
99 for Native Americans throughout the ages, and archeological digs
1010 have produced evidence that the Clovis Man lived there more than
1111 12,000 years ago; and
1212 WHEREAS, San Marcos was the site of several Spanish
1313 attempts at colonization before the first Anglo-Americans
1414 settled in the area around 1846; the Texas Legislature organized
1515 Hays County on March 1, 1848, and designated the young community
1616 of less than 400 residents as the county seat; and
1717 WHEREAS, The town began its development as the commercial
1818 center for cart trade between area farmers and ranchers and
1919 coastal commission merchants and as a center for ginning and
2020 milling of local agricultural products; and
2121 WHEREAS, The chartering in 1899 and subsequent opening in
2222 1903 of Southwest Texas State Normal School and the founding of
2323 San Marcos Baptist Academy in 1907 established education as a
2424 local industry, and San Marcos is now the home of Texas State
2525 University, the fourth-largest university in the state; and
2626 WHEREAS, Visitors can enjoy the natural beauty of Aquarena
2727 Springs, the San Marcos River, and pristine city parks, quaint
2828 shops in the historic downtown area, and community events such as
2929 concerts at the university, the Sunday San Market, the Farmers
3030 Co-Op, the Downtown Swing Festival, and the Mutt Strutt; and
3131 WHEREAS, The citizens of San Marcos are building on an
3232 impressive tradition of achievement and public spirit, and they
3333 may indeed take great pride in their contributions to the story
3434 of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
3535 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
3636 Legislature, hereby recognize April 25, 2019, as San Marcos Day
3737 at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation
3838 sincere best wishes for a meaningful and memorable celebration.
