| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Representatives from the City of San Marcos and |
|---|
| 3 | 3 | | the San Marcos Area Chamber of Commerce and other community |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | businesses and organizations are gathering in Austin on April 25, |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | 2019, to celebrate San Marcos Day at the State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, San Marcos is the county seat of Hays County and |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | is located 25 miles south of Austin, where the San Marcos River |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | rises from its many springs; the area has been a watering place |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | for Native Americans throughout the ages, and archeological digs |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | have produced evidence that the Clovis Man lived there more than |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | 12,000 years ago; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, San Marcos was the site of several Spanish |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | attempts at colonization before the first Anglo-Americans |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | settled in the area around 1846; the Texas Legislature organized |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Hays County on March 1, 1848, and designated the young community |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | of less than 400 residents as the county seat; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, The town began its development as the commercial |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | center for cart trade between area farmers and ranchers and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | coastal commission merchants and as a center for ginning and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | milling of local agricultural products; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, The chartering in 1899 and subsequent opening in |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | 1903 of Southwest Texas State Normal School and the founding of |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | San Marcos Baptist Academy in 1907 established education as a |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | local industry, and San Marcos is now the home of Texas State |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | University, the fourth-largest university in the state; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Visitors can enjoy the natural beauty of Aquarena |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Springs, the San Marcos River, and pristine city parks, quaint |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | shops in the historic downtown area, and community events such as |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | concerts at the university, the Sunday San Market, the Farmers |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Co-Op, the Downtown Swing Festival, and the Mutt Strutt; and |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, The citizens of San Marcos are building on an |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | impressive tradition of achievement and public spirit, and they |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | may indeed take great pride in their contributions to the story |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | Legislature, hereby recognize April 25, 2019, as San Marcos Day |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | sincere best wishes for a meaningful and memorable celebration. |
