2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Texas Senate is pleased to recognize April 25, |

3 | 3 | | 2019, as Trinity University Day at the State Capitol and to |
---|
4 | 4 | | welcome the visiting delegation from San Antonio; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The history of Trinity University can be traced |
---|
6 | 6 | | back 150 years ago to 1869, when a group of hardy Texans chose the |
---|
7 | 7 | | tiny town of Tehuacana as Trinity University's first home; here |
---|
8 | 8 | | they aspired to establish "a university of the highest order," |
---|
9 | 9 | | and on the first day of classes, five faculty members greeted |
---|
10 | 10 | | seven students; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, In 1902, the university relocated to nearby |
---|
12 | 12 | | Waxahachie to improve its financial footing and enrollment, and |
---|
13 | 13 | | while things improved measurably, the stock market crash of 1929 |
---|
14 | 14 | | plunged the country and Trinity into a prolonged period of |
---|
15 | 15 | | economic depression; in 1942, the university relocated to the |
---|
16 | 16 | | Alamo City following an invitation from the San Antonio Chamber |
---|
17 | 17 | | of Commerce, forever changing the school's trajectory; for 10 |
---|
18 | 18 | | years, Trinity existed in military barracks and Quonset huts on |
---|
19 | 19 | | the city's near West Side; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, In 1952, Trinity University moved to an abandoned |
---|
21 | 21 | | limestone quarry north of downtown, where it remains on strong |
---|
22 | 22 | | footing today; the university's iconic "Skyline Campus" features |
---|
23 | 23 | | Murchison Tower, a landmark to San Antonians and visitors alike, |
---|
24 | 24 | | and beautiful red brick mid-century architecture by renowned |
---|
25 | 25 | | architect O'Neil Ford; the campus was recently listed as a |
---|
26 | 26 | | National Historic District, the only such campus in Texas and one |
---|
27 | 27 | | of only three in the United States; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, A liberal arts and sciences education at Trinity |
---|
29 | 29 | | produces citizens who can face 21st century challenges head-on; |
---|
30 | 30 | | Trinity University forms independent critical thinkers who are |
---|
31 | 31 | | practical and compassionate learners; a properly applied liberal |
---|
32 | 32 | | arts education enables students to make sense of their world, and |
---|
33 | 33 | | even more importantly, to make positive and lasting impacts in |
---|
34 | 34 | | it; some of the biggest lessons at Trinity are learned outside of |
---|
35 | 35 | | the classroom; students are encouraged to take what they learn on |
---|
36 | 36 | | campus and use it to help benefit the city of San Antonio, the |
---|
37 | 37 | | state of Texas, and beyond; and |
---|
38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, A Trinity University liberal arts and sciences |
---|
39 | 39 | | education is founded on undergraduate research, entrepreneurship, |
---|
40 | 40 | | experiential learning, and international engagement, and Trinity |
---|
41 | 41 | | Tigers are seizing every opportunity to redefine a liberal arts |
---|
42 | 42 | | education, cultivating a community of lifelong learners driven by a |
---|
43 | 43 | | sense of duty; and |

44 | 44 | | WHEREAS, The university is nationally recognized as one of |
---|
45 | 45 | | the top small liberal arts universities in the nation, receiving |
---|
46 | 46 | | accolades from the Wall Street Journal, the Princeton Review, and |
---|
47 | 47 | | U.S. News & World Report; Trinity was also recently named by |
---|
48 | 48 | | Money.com as the number two university in the nation for best |
---|
49 | 49 | | colleges for merit aid; and |
---|
50 | 50 | | WHEREAS, Trinity boasts many accomplished alumni, |
---|
51 | 51 | | including United States Senator John Cornyn, Whole Foods Market |
---|
52 | 52 | | cofounder and CEO John Mackey, philanthropist and KIND founder |
---|
53 | 53 | | and CEO Daniel Lubetzky, actress Jaclyn Smith, San Antonio Mayor |

54 | 54 | | Ron Nirenberg, poet and novelist Naomi Shihab Nye, and Major |
---|
55 | 55 | | League Baseball player and manager Davey Johnson; and |

56 | 56 | | WHEREAS, Forged in economic hardship and solidly rooted in |

57 | 57 | | rugged limestone bluffs, Trinity University today stands |

58 | 58 | | resolute and strong as it continuously transforms to meet the |

59 | 59 | | needs of its students, its community, and the world; now, |
---|

61 | 61 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |

62 | 62 | | Legislature, hereby recognize April 25, 2019, as Trinity |
