11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 662
22 WHEREAS, On April 19, 1836, Isaac Batterson made a unique
33 contribution to the fight for Texas independence, and this
44 occasion is truly deserving of special commemoration; and
55 WHEREAS, A native of Connecticut, Mr. Batterson emigrated
66 to Texas in 1833, and in 1835, he purchased land along Buffalo
77 Bayou in Southeast Texas, establishing a settlement he called
88 Clinton, after his former hometown in the state of New York; he
99 was a friend of General Sam Houston and a supporter of the Texas
1010 Revolution; and
1111 WHEREAS, During the final days of the revolution in April
1212 1836, Mr. Batterson's settlement was occupied by the army of
1313 General Houston, who was maneuvering to engage the Mexican troops
1414 led by General Antonio López de Santa Anna; the Texas army's
1515 passage was blocked, however, by the rain-swollen waters of
1616 Buffalo Bayou, so on April 19, 1836, General Houston ordered his
1717 men to tear up the flooring of Mr. Batterson's house and build
1818 rafts out of the boards; the army subsequently crossed the bayou
1919 and, two days later, decisively defeated General Santa Anna at
2020 the Battle of San Jacinto, thus ensuring the independence of
2121 Texas; and
2222 WHEREAS, The community that Mr. Batterson founded is now
2323 known as Galena Park, and a Texas Historical Marker marks the
2424 site of his house near Buffalo Bayou; he served as the first
2525 justice of the peace in Harrisburg County and helped survey the
2626 future site of Houston, and he died at the age of 46 on February
2727 19, 1838, a proud citizen of the Republic of Texas; and
2828 WHEREAS, Isaac Batterson played an important role in a
2929 pivotal chapter in the struggle for Texas independence, and he
3030 has earned the lasting appreciation of the citizens of the Lone
3131 Star State; now, therefore, be it
3232 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
3333 Legislature, hereby recognize April 19, 2020, as Isaac Batterson
3434 Day in honor of this distinguished Texan.
