2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Sarah Matteson has greatly benefited many Texas |

3 | 3 | | Woman's University students through her tireless efforts in |

4 | 4 | | behalf of the Frontiers Program; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Frontiers Program was established to provide |
---|
6 | 6 | | support, encouragement, and individual mentoring to students who |
---|
7 | 7 | | have experienced foster care; nationally, under 10 percent of |
---|
8 | 8 | | such students will graduate from college, but the program has |
---|
9 | 9 | | been able to achieve significantly better results at TWU; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Sarah Matteson helps students navigate the |
---|
11 | 11 | | complexities of college life in her role as Frontiers Program |
---|
12 | 12 | | advisor, case manager, and campus and community liaison; |
---|
13 | 13 | | moreover, she is the advisor for Success for the Future, a |
---|
14 | 14 | | student-led organization for those who have experienced foster |
---|
15 | 15 | | care, adoption, homelessness, or loss of their support systems; |
---|
16 | 16 | | she also assists in operations of TWU's monthly mobile food |
---|
17 | 17 | | pantry, a partnership with the North Texas Food Bank; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Born to an impoverished single mother of four, |
---|
19 | 19 | | Ms. Matteson received irregular schooling throughout her youth, |
---|
20 | 20 | | and she was placed in foster care a number of times; she aged out |
---|
21 | 21 | | of the system with no one to rely on for support, and during her |
---|
22 | 22 | | first two years of higher education, she endured homelessness, |
---|
23 | 23 | | food insecurity, and other challenges; nevertheless, she |
---|
24 | 24 | | persevered in her drive to become the first college graduate in |
---|
25 | 25 | | her family, and after transferring to TWU, she completed her |
---|
26 | 26 | | bachelor's degree in social work in 2011, earning recognition as |
---|
27 | 27 | | the Title IXE Student of the Year; subsequently, she earned her |
---|
28 | 28 | | master's degree with a 4.0 grade point average, became a Licensed |
---|
29 | 29 | | Master Social Worker, and joined the staff of the Frontiers |
---|
30 | 30 | | Program; in addition to her professional endeavors at TWU, |
---|
31 | 31 | | Ms. Matteson has given generously of her time, talents, and |
---|
32 | 32 | | resources as a CASA volunteer, guest speaker, mentor, and host |
---|
33 | 33 | | for youth who have aged out of foster care; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, An inspiring role model, Sarah Matteson is |
---|
35 | 35 | | helping Frontiers Program students achieve their dreams at Texas |
---|
36 | 36 | | Woman's University, and in so doing, she has earned the |
---|
37 | 37 | | admiration and appreciation of all who are fortunate enough to |
---|
38 | 38 | | know her; now, therefore, be it |
---|
39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
---|
40 | 40 | | Legislature, hereby honor Sarah Matteson for her outstanding |
---|
41 | 41 | | contributions to the Frontiers Program at Texas Woman's |
---|
42 | 42 | | University and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued |
