|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Approximately 95 percent of atrial fibrillation |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | is nonvalvular, and nonvalvular AF affects an estimated 5.8 |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | million people in the United States; the risk of stroke is five |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | times greater for these individuals, and nonvalvular atrial |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | fibrillation is estimated to cost $6.65 billion per year, |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | primarily due to the direct and indirect costs of |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | hospitalization; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, In Texas, stroke was the third-leading cause of |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | death as of 2015, with a prevalence of three percent among |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | persons 18 years of age and older; it also disproportionately |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | affects non-Hispanic blacks, who are significantly more likely |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | to die from stroke than whites; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Risk factors for atrial fibrillation include |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | high blood pressure, heart failure, diabetes, advanced age, |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | hyperthyroidism, and heart disease; in addition, many |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | modifiable lifestyle behaviors can lead to a stroke, among them |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | physical inactivity, tobacco use, poor diet, and heavy alcohol |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | consumption; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Atrial fibrillation is an extremely serious |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | health issue, but outcomes can be improved with heightened |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | awareness of the condition and effective measures for treatment |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | and prevention; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Legislature, hereby recognize September 2019 as Atrial |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Fibrillation Awareness Month and commend the Texas Department of |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | State Health Services, the Texas Council on Cardiovascular |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Disease and Stroke, and the Texas Heart Attack and Stroke Data |

| 32 | 32 | | Collaborative for their efforts to address atrial fibrillation. |
