1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 683
2	2	WHEREAS, The students, faculty, and staff of Texas A&M
3	3	University--San Antonio are celebrating the school's 10th
4	4	anniversary in 2019; and
5	5	WHEREAS, Texas A&M University--San Antonio was established
6	6	as a stand-alone institution in May 2009, after Governor Rick
7	7	Perry signed into law Senate Bill 629 from the 81st Texas
8	8	Legislature; that momentous occasion was the culmination of a
9	9	process that had begun in 1997, when Senator Frank Madla first
10	10	requested proposals to create a college in South San Antonio; the
11	11	first classes convened in 2000 under the name Texas A&M
12	12	University-Kingsville System Center-San Antonio, and the
13	13	campus's permanent home was established in 2007 with the receipt
14	14	of nearly 700 acres from the Verano Land Group; and
15	15	WHEREAS, The first upper-division institution of higher
16	16	education on the city's South Side, Texas A&M University--San
17	17	Antonio has filled a vital need in the community, and it has grown
18	18	dramatically; by the fall of 2017, the school had seen a 340
19	19	percent increase in enrollment over the previous nine years; to
20	20	keep pace with the needs of its students, the university has
21	21	opened a number of state-of-the-art facilities, including the
22	22	recent additions of Esperanza Hall, the Presidio Gallery, and the
23	23	Science and Technology Building; and
24	24	WHEREAS, Today Texas A&M University--San Antonio serves
25	25	nearly 6,500 students--approximately 77 percent of whom are the
26	26	first in their family to attend college--and the school has
27	27	graduated more than 8,000 alumni; offering degrees in over 30
28	28	undergraduate and graduate courses of study, the university
29	29	provides students with the opportunity to earn an affordable
30	30	education in a variety of in-demand fields, such as education,
31	31	business, criminology, biology, and information technology and
32	32	cybersecurity; and
33	33	WHEREAS, During the past decade, Texas A&M University--San
34	34	Antonio has given thousands of Texans a strong academic
35	35	foundation on which to build, and the school is indeed deserving
36	36	of recognition as it celebrates this important milestone in its
37	37	history; now, therefore, be it
38	38	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
39	39	Legislature, hereby commemorate the 10th anniversary of Texas
40	40	A&M University--San Antonio and extend to all those associated
41	41	with the institution sincere best wishes for the future; and, be
42	42	it further
43	43	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
44	44	prepared for Texas A&M University--San Antonio as an expression
45	45	of high regard by the Texas Senate.
