2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Professor M. Theron Waddell is retiring from |

3 | 3 | | Galveston College on May 20, 2019, drawing to a close a |

4 | 4 | | remarkable career as an educator that has spanned more than half |
---|
5 | 5 | | a century; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Theron Waddell earned his bachelor's and master's |
---|
7 | 7 | | degrees in government and history at The University of Texas, and |
---|
8 | 8 | | early in his career, he worked for the Texas Legislature in the |
---|
9 | 9 | | offices of two state senators; from 1967 to 1969, he was staff |
---|
10 | 10 | | counsel to the Senate Interim Committee on Vocational-Technical |
---|
11 | 11 | | Education, and he authored "To Bridge the Gap," a comprehensive |
---|
12 | 12 | | report that helped lay the foundation for the state's current |
---|
13 | 13 | | system of vocational and technical education; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, After teaching for Sam Houston State University, |
---|
15 | 15 | | Houston Baptist College, San Antonio College, and San Jacinto |
---|
16 | 16 | | College, Professor Waddell joined the faculty of Galveston |
---|
17 | 17 | | College in 1969; in addition to teaching government, he has |
---|
18 | 18 | | served as chair of the department of social sciences, special |
---|
19 | 19 | | assistant to the president for policy research and writing, |
---|
20 | 20 | | acting assistant dean of the division of humanities, acting |
---|
21 | 21 | | director of student services, and director of the division of |
---|
22 | 22 | | arts and humanities; he has also taught as an adjunct at Texas A&M |
---|
23 | 23 | | University in Galveston and at the University of Houston-Clear |
---|
24 | 24 | | Lake; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, A leader in his profession, Professor Waddell has |
---|
26 | 26 | | contributed to the Texas Community College Teachers Association |
---|
27 | 27 | | as vicepresidentandprogramchairofthegovernmentsection; |
---|
28 | 28 | | moreover, he served for six terms as president of the Galveston |
---|
29 | 29 | | College Faculty Senate, and he drafted the original constitution |
---|
30 | 30 | | of the Galveston College Faculty Council; also engaged in the |
---|
31 | 31 | | wider community, he has served as chair of the Galveston County |
---|
32 | 32 | | Democratic Party, and he is a longtime volunteer with Dickens on |
---|
33 | 33 | | The Strand and The Grand 1894 Opera House; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Professor Waddell's dedication, expertise, and |
---|
35 | 35 | | commitment to excellence have benefited thousands of students at |
---|
36 | 36 | | Galveston College over the past five decades, and he may indeed |
---|
37 | 37 | | reflect with pride on a career well spent as he embarks upon the |
---|
38 | 38 | | next exciting chapter of his life; now, therefore, be it |
---|
39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
---|
40 | 40 | | Legislature, hereby congratulate M. Theron Waddell on his |
---|
41 | 41 | | retirement from Galveston College and extend to him sincere best |
---|
42 | 42 | | wishes for the future; and, be it further |
---|
43 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |

44 | 44 | | prepared for Professor Waddell as an expression of high regard by |
