11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 690
22 WHEREAS, In an exceptional career that spanned more than
33 four decades Lou Holtz distinguished himself as one of the top
44 coaches in college football; and
55 WHEREAS, A native of West Virginia and a graduate of East
66 Liverpool High School in Ohio, Lou Holtz earned a bachelor's
77 degree at Kent State University, where he was a linebacker for
88 two seasons before an injury ended his playing career; he began
99 coaching as an assistant for the Iowa Hawkeyes football team in
1010 1960, and he later served in that role at the College of William
1111 and Mary, the University of Connecticut, the University of South
1212 Carolina, and Ohio State University; and
1313 WHEREAS, His work as a head coach began in 1969 at William
1414 and Mary; after directing the North Carolina State University
1515 program from 1972 to 1975, he joined the NFL to helm the New York
1616 Jets for the 1976 season; the following year, he returned to NCAA
1717 football with the University of Arkansas, and he went on to coach
1818 at the University of Minnesota before beginning his outstanding
1919 11-year run at Notre Dame; he closed out his career with the South
2020 Carolina Gamecocks from 1999 to 2004; and
2121 WHEREAS, Coach Holtz compiled nearly 250 wins as a college
2222 head coach, and at the time of his retirement, he was ranked third
2323 in victories among active coaches and eighth in winning
2424 percentage; he took teams to more than 20 NCAA bowl games, and he
2525 reached the pinnacle of success in 1988, when the Fighting Irish
2626 clinched the national championship after compiling a perfect
2727 12-0 record; other highlights include winning conference titles
2828 with the College of William and Mary in 1970, North Carolina
2929 State in 1973, and Arkansas in 1979; today, he remains the only
3030 college football coach to have ever piloted six different
3131 programs to bowl games, to have won bowl games with five
3232 different teams, or to have led four separate schools to Top 20
3333 finishes; and
3434 WHEREAS, Widely revered for his contributions to the game,
3535 Coach Holtz has been the recipient of a host of accolades; in both
3636 1977 and 1988, he earned three prestigious honors: the Paul
3737 "Bear" Bryant Award, the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award,
3838 and Sporting News College Football Coach of the Year Award;
3939 moreover, he was presented with the 1972 Atlantic Coast
4040 Conference Coach of the Year Award, the 1977 Walter Camp Coach of
4141 the Year Award, and the 2000 Southeastern Conference Coach of the
4242 Year Award; in recognition of his many achievements, he was
4343 inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2008; and
4444 WHEREAS, The tremendous passion, leadership, and vision
4545 that Lou Holtz brought to each of the football teams he guided
4646 continues to inspire generations of athletes and football fans
4747 alike, and his accomplishments are indeed deserving of special
4848 recognition; now, therefore, be it
4949 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
5050 Legislature, hereby honor Lou Holtz for his exemplary career as a
5151 coach and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be
5252 it further
5353 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
5454 prepared for Coach Holtz as an expression of high regard by the
5555 Texas Senate.
