11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 694
22 WHEREAS, Twenty-three Texas A&M University students are
33 providing valuable support to the 86th Texas Legislature while
44 gaining experience in public service as members of the
55 Agricultural and Natural Resources Policy Internship Program and
66 the Public Policy Internship Program; and
77 WHEREAS, For almost three decades, the Agricultural and
88 Natural Resources Policy Internship Program has sent student
99 interns to Austin and Washington, D.C., where they work on a wide
1010 array of issues; their strong background and interest in
1111 agriculture and natural resources allow them to offer
1212 specialized knowledge to legislators; the program was founded in
1313 response to a request by a member of the United States Congress
1414 for an intern who could assist his office with these matters, and
1515 it has since grown to include numerous congressional offices as
1616 well as the United States House of Representatives Committee on
1717 Agriculture, the United States Department of Agriculture, and
1818 offices on the state level during legislative years;
1919 approximately 1,000 students have participated in semester-long
2020 internships; and
2121 WHEREAS, The Public Policy Internship Program, established
2222 in 1999, works with various colleges and departments to create an
2323 interdisciplinary environment for comprehensive academic
2424 training, research, and policy programming; interns in the
2525 nation's capital and in Austin serve in a variety of settings
2626 that align with their academic and professional goals; some 900
2727 students have participated in semester-long internships; and
2828 WHEREAS, Led by director Stephanie Webb, both internship
2929 programs select their highly qualified and dedicated
3030 participants through a rigorous application process; in addition
3131 to academic achievement, students must demonstrate their
3232 potential to take full advantage of the opportunities for
3333 scholarly and professional development as well as the desire to
3434 serve our state and nation; and
3535 WHEREAS, The 2019 Texas A&M University policy interns
3636 serving in Austin are Brandon Alaniz, Julia Awad, Grace Binger,
3737 Montana Cortez, Brittany Frazier, Spencer Krumholz, Koy Kunkel,
3838 Alexis Little, Alejandra Luna, Samantha Mares, Lindsey Moore,
3939 Andrea Nwachukwu, Tyler Roberts, Halee Sanderson, Lauren Savage,
4040 Erin Smith, Maggie Sullivan, Julia Szabuniewicz, Wesley Tanton,
4141 Sara Uddin, Noemi Valiente, Armando Vendrell-Velez, Ashley
4242 Wilde; and
4343 WHEREAS, Through the years, the Agricultural and Natural
4444 Resources Policy and Public Policy Internship Programs have
4545 helped exceptional students deepen their understanding of
4646 governmental operations while developing professional skills and
4747 networks, and alumni have gone on to make vital contributions and
4848 assume leadership roles in a variety of arenas; the outstanding
4949 young people who are giving of their time and talents throughout
5050 this legislative session can indeed take pride in their
5151 achievements and service to the Lone Star State; now, therefore,
5252 be it
5353 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
5454 Legislature, hereby recognize the Texas A&M University
5555 Agricultural and Natural Resources Policy Internship Program and
5656 Public Policy Internship Program and commend the current
5757 participants for their diligence and commitment; and, be
5858 it further
5959 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
6060 students as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
