2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Twenty-three Texas A&M University students are |

3 | 3 | | providing valuable support to the 86th Texas Legislature while |

4 | 4 | | gaining experience in public service as members of the |

5 | 5 | | Agricultural and Natural Resources Policy Internship Program and |
---|
6 | 6 | | the Public Policy Internship Program; and |
---|
7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, For almost three decades, the Agricultural and |
---|
8 | 8 | | Natural Resources Policy Internship Program has sent student |
---|
9 | 9 | | interns to Austin and Washington, D.C., where they work on a wide |
---|
10 | 10 | | array of issues; their strong background and interest in |
---|
11 | 11 | | agriculture and natural resources allow them to offer |
---|
12 | 12 | | specialized knowledge to legislators; the program was founded in |
---|
13 | 13 | | response to a request by a member of the United States Congress |
---|
14 | 14 | | for an intern who could assist his office with these matters, and |
---|
15 | 15 | | it has since grown to include numerous congressional offices as |
---|
16 | 16 | | well as the United States House of Representatives Committee on |
---|
17 | 17 | | Agriculture, the United States Department of Agriculture, and |
---|
18 | 18 | | offices on the state level during legislative years; |
---|
19 | 19 | | approximately 1,000 students have participated in semester-long |
---|
20 | 20 | | internships; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, The Public Policy Internship Program, established |
---|
22 | 22 | | in 1999, works with various colleges and departments to create an |
---|
23 | 23 | | interdisciplinary environment for comprehensive academic |
---|
24 | 24 | | training, research, and policy programming; interns in the |
---|
25 | 25 | | nation's capital and in Austin serve in a variety of settings |
---|
26 | 26 | | that align with their academic and professional goals; some 900 |
---|
27 | 27 | | students have participated in semester-long internships; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Led by director Stephanie Webb, both internship |
---|
29 | 29 | | programs select their highly qualified and dedicated |
---|
30 | 30 | | participants through a rigorous application process; in addition |
---|
31 | 31 | | to academic achievement, students must demonstrate their |
---|
32 | 32 | | potential to take full advantage of the opportunities for |
---|
33 | 33 | | scholarly and professional development as well as the desire to |
---|
34 | 34 | | serve our state and nation; and |
---|
35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, The 2019 Texas A&M University policy interns |
---|
36 | 36 | | serving in Austin are Brandon Alaniz, Julia Awad, Grace Binger, |

37 | 37 | | Montana Cortez, Brittany Frazier, Spencer Krumholz, Koy Kunkel, |

38 | 38 | | Alexis Little, Alejandra Luna, Samantha Mares, Lindsey Moore, |

39 | 39 | | Andrea Nwachukwu, Tyler Roberts, Halee Sanderson, Lauren Savage, |

40 | 40 | | Erin Smith, Maggie Sullivan, Julia Szabuniewicz, Wesley Tanton, |

43 | 43 | | WHEREAS, Through the years, the Agricultural and Natural |

47 | 47 | | networks, and alumni have gone on to make vital contributions and |

48 | 48 | | assume leadership roles in a variety of arenas; the outstanding |

49 | 49 | | young people who are giving of their time and talents throughout |

50 | 50 | | this legislative session can indeed take pride in their |
---|
51 | 51 | | achievements and service to the Lone Star State; now, therefore, |

53 | 53 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |

54 | 54 | | Legislature, hereby recognize the Texas A&M University |

55 | 55 | | Agricultural and Natural Resources Policy Internship Program and |

---|
