11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 701
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize Deborah D. Tucker, who has been selected as a 2019
44 Women's History Honoree by the National Women's History
55 Alliance; and
66 WHEREAS, Deborah Tucker was chosen for this prestigious
77 award for her exceptional work as an advocate for peace and
88 ending violence; her efforts embody the 2019 theme of the
99 National Women's History Alliance, which is "Visionary Women,
1010 Champions of Peace and Nonviolence"; and
1111 WHEREAS, She began her long and distinguished service in
1212 the field of nonviolence in 1975, when she became a volunteer
1313 with the Austin Rape Crisis Center; she went on to serve as
1414 executive director of the Austin Center for Battered Women, and
1515 she was later instrumental in the creation of SafePlace, which
1616 was recognized as a national model for the provision of services
1717 and advocacy and is now SAFE Alliance; and
1818 WHEREAS, She cofounded the Texas Council on Family
1919 Violence in 1978 and has worked closely with the Texas
2020 Legislature to craft some of the nation's most effective domestic
2121 violence laws; she coordinated with Senator Joe Biden and groups
2222 across the country to write and pass the Violence Against Women
2323 Act of 1994; and
2424 WHEREAS, She is a cofounder of the National Domestic
2525 Violence Hotline and the National Center on Domestic and Sexual
2626 Violence, and she has worked closely with the Department of
2727 Defense on the Defense Task Force on Domestic Violence; she has
2828 written numerous articles on the issue of violence and has
2929 trained countless others to carry on this vital work, and it is
3030 truly fitting that she receive special recognition; now,
3131 therefore, be it
3232 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
3333 Legislature, hereby extend congratulations to Deborah D. Tucker
3434 on being named a 2019 Women's History Honoree; and, be it further
3535 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3636 her as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
