55 WHEREAS, A life made rich through meaningful accomplishments
66 drew to a close with the passing of Dr. Richard F. Ulrich of Tyler
77 on April 4, 2019, at the age of 83; and
88 WHEREAS, Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on April 13, 1935, Dick
99 Ulrich was the son of Francis Xavier and Elsie Fuzer Ulrich;
1010 after his father died when he was 10 years old, he worked multiple
1111 jobs throughout high school and college to help pay for his
1212 education; he graduated from Fairview High School in 1953 and
1313 went on to earn a degree in chemistry from Xavier University in
1414 Cincinnati; after beginning dental school at Northwestern
1515 University in Chicago, he obtained his medical degree at Ohio
1616 State University in 1964; and
1717 WHEREAS, Dr. Ulrich continued his training as an intern and
1818 resident at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, where he met his future
1919 wife, Nancy, who was a nurse at the hospital; he was drafted to
2020 serve in the Vietnam War in March 1966, and the couple exchanged
2121 wedding vows in May before he was deployed to Okinawa; and
2222 WHEREAS, After serving as a captain and preventive medical
2323 officer in Southeast Asia for the duration of his tour,
2424 Dr. Ulrich returned stateside in 1968 and completed his medical
2525 residency in St. Louis; he received additional neurology
2626 training, earning his board certification in 1972, and then moved
2727 with his family to begin a private practice in Lafayette,
2828 Louisiana; in 1974, the Ulrichs relocated to Tyler, where
2929 Dr. Ulrich practiced for 40 years, before retiring in 2014; he
3030 also contributed to his profession as a member of the Smith
3131 County Medical Society, the Texas Medical Society, the Texas
3232 Neurological Society, the American Academy of Neurology, and the
3333 American Association of Disability Evaluating Physicians; and
3434 WHEREAS, Dr. Ulrich had a passion for cars and loved
3535 working on them in his leisure time; in 1985, he founded the East
3636 Texas Auto and Cycle Show, which raised proceeds at first for
3737 muscular dystrophy research and later for the East Texas Crisis
3838 Center; and
3939 WHEREAS, Over the course of 52 years of marriage, he and
4040 his wife became the proud parents of two sons, Robert and
4141 Gregory, and a daughter, Elizabeth, and they were delighted to
4242 welcome into their family eight grandchildren, Hudson, Hayden,
4343 Paxton, Emma, Kate, Jay, Andrew, and Violet; and
4444 WHEREAS, While the passing of Dr. Dick Ulrich brings great
4545 sadness to his family and friends, he leaves behind a legacy that
4646 will long be treasured by all those who were privileged to know
4747 him; now, therefore, be it
4848 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
4949 Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of Dr. Richard
5050 F. Ulrich and extend sincere sympathy to his loved ones; and, be
5151 it further
5252 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
5353 prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns
5454 this day, it do so in memory of Dick Ulrich.
