| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, was |

| 3 | 3 | | founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C., in 1908 and has |

| 4 | 4 | | the distinction of being the first Greek-letter sorority |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | established by African American college women; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority's unending quest to be |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | "supreme in service to all mankind" is carried out through the |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | work of members of more than 1,000 domestic and international |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | chapters around the world; and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, The sorority's membership consists of nearly |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | 300,000 energetic, ambitious, and dedicated college-trained |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | women who have consciously chosen this affiliation in order to be |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | of service and to promote community initiatives in health |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | preservation, preventative health education, academic |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | excellence, civic engagement, and economic empowerment; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Sorority sisters are focused on improving the |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | lives of others, and it is their constant goal to strive for |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | integrity, discipline, and compassion in all that they do; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority chapters encourage |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | members to become committed community volunteers in five primary |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | service areas that contribute to the educational, civic, and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | social lives of fellow citizens; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Texas is part of the Alpha Kappa Alpha South |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Central Region, which also includes Louisiana, Arkansas, and New |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Mexico; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, AKA Day at the State Capitol is a national program |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | through which Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority members across the |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | nation meet with their legislators to address issues that are |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | pertinent to their communities; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Legislature, hereby commend Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Incorporated, on 111 years of outstanding community service and |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | its members on their exemplary leadership and designate May 14, |

| 34 | 34 | | 2019, as South Central Region AKA Day at the State Capitol. |
