| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Collegiate and alumnae members of Delta Sigma |

| 3 | 3 | | Theta Sorority, Incorporated, are gathering in Austin on May 15, |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | 2019, to celebrate Red and White Day, a day of advocacy and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | action, at the State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded in 1913 |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | at Howard University in Washington, D.C.; the 22 original members |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | included four young women from Texas, Zephyr Chisom Carter, |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Jessie McGuire Dent, Frederica Chase Dodd, and Myra Davis |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Hemmings, all of whom were committed to academic excellence and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | social change; members marched in a women's suffrage parade soon |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | after the sorority's founding, and the sorority was incorporated |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | as a national organization in 1930; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Since its founding, more than 200,000 women have |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | joined Delta Sigma Theta in the United States and in several |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | foreign countries; the sorority has about 1,000 chapters, with |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | many in the Lone Star State; members work toward positive change |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | in their communities and are advocates for economic development, |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | international awareness, physical and mental health, and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | improvements in education; moreover, they mentor at-risk young |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | women, conduct voter awareness drives, host political forums, |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | and help guide and inform public policy; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Many members of the sorority have gone on to have |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | distinguished careers in public service, including Texas state |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | representatives Rhetta Andrews Bowers and Toni Rose, as well as |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | the late state representative Ruth Jones McClendon and the late |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | congresswoman Barbara Jordan; and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, The women of Delta Sigma Theta have enriched the |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | State of Texas and the nation through their generosity and their |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | wide array of programs and services, and it is indeed a pleasure to |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | commend them for their noteworthy endeavors; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Legislature, hereby recognize May 15, 2019, as Red and White Day |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | at the State Capitol and extend to all those involved with Delta |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, sincere best wishes for the |

| 36 | 36 | | future; and, be it further |

| 37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the |
