6 | 6 | | with the passing of Vatra Grace Solomon of Mount Pleasant on |

7 | 7 | | May 22, 2018, at the age of 71; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The daughter of former state representative Neal |
---|
9 | 9 | | Solomon and Barbara Connelly Solomon, Vatra Solomon was born in |
---|
10 | 10 | | Commerce on October 3, 1946, and grew up with a sister, Nila, and |
---|
11 | 11 | | a brother, Jim; she graduated from Mount Vernon High School and |
---|
12 | 12 | | completed her bachelor's degree in elementary education and |
---|
13 | 13 | | music at East Texas State University; early in her career, she |
---|
14 | 14 | | taught in Dallas and Mount Vernon and worked for the Texas State |
---|
15 | 15 | | Teachers Association; she went on to join her father's insurance |
---|
16 | 16 | | business and opened Solomon Insurance in Mount Pleasant in |
---|
17 | 17 | | 1983; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Solomon joined Bill Ratliff's successful |
---|
19 | 19 | | campaign for the state senate in 1988 and then became his |
---|
20 | 20 | | executive assistant in Austin and Mount Pleasant; she continued |
---|
21 | 21 | | to serve in his office after he became lieutenant governor in |
---|
22 | 22 | | 2001, and his predecessor, Bob Bullock, fondly deemed her "strong |
---|
23 | 23 | | as horseradish" in her role as gatekeeper; always kind and |
---|
24 | 24 | | gracious, she was a confidant to public officials and fellow |
---|
25 | 25 | | staffers alike, and the counsel she offered freely was both frank |
---|
26 | 26 | | and wise; she advocated for teachers and set an inspiring example |
---|
27 | 27 | | through her commitment to the greater good of the Lone Star |
---|
28 | 28 | | State; in 2001, she received the inaugural Betty King Award for |
---|
29 | 29 | | Legislative Staff Service; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Following Lieutenant Governor Ratliff's retirement, |
---|
31 | 31 | | Ms. Solomon served as East Texas outreach coordinator for |
---|
32 | 32 | | then-state comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn; she later joined |
---|
33 | 33 | | Eric Wright & Associates, a government relations consulting |
---|
34 | 34 | | firm; over the years, she served as president of the chambers of |
---|
35 | 35 | | commerce in both Mount Vernon and Mount Pleasant, and she was |
---|
36 | 36 | | appointed by Governor Mark White to the Sulphur River Basin |
---|
37 | 37 | | Authority; and |
---|
38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, Vatra Solomon lived a caring and purposeful life |
---|
39 | 39 | | dedicated to the well-being of her fellow Texans, and she will be |
---|
40 | 40 | | remembered with deep admiration and affection by all who were |
---|
41 | 41 | | fortunate enough to know her; now, therefore, be it |
---|
42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
---|
43 | 43 | | Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the memory of Vatra Grace |
---|
44 | 44 | | Solomon and extend sincere condolences to all who mourn her |
---|
45 | 45 | | passing; and, be it further |
---|
46 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |
