55 WHEREAS, The State of Texas lost an admired public servant
66 with the passing of Vatra Grace Solomon of Mount Pleasant on
77 May 22, 2018, at the age of 71; and
88 WHEREAS, The daughter of former state representative Neal
99 Solomon and Barbara Connelly Solomon, Vatra Solomon was born in
1010 Commerce on October 3, 1946, and grew up with a sister, Nila, and
1111 a brother, Jim; she graduated from Mount Vernon High School and
1212 completed her bachelor's degree in elementary education and
1313 music at East Texas State University; early in her career, she
1414 taught in Dallas and Mount Vernon and worked for the Texas State
1515 Teachers Association; she went on to join her father's insurance
1616 business and opened Solomon Insurance in Mount Pleasant in
1717 1983; and
1818 WHEREAS, Ms. Solomon joined Bill Ratliff's successful
1919 campaign for the state senate in 1988 and then became his
2020 executive assistant in Austin and Mount Pleasant; she continued
2121 to serve in his office after he became lieutenant governor in
2222 2001, and his predecessor, Bob Bullock, fondly deemed her "strong
2323 as horseradish" in her role as gatekeeper; always kind and
2424 gracious, she was a confidant to public officials and fellow
2525 staffers alike, and the counsel she offered freely was both frank
2626 and wise; she advocated for teachers and set an inspiring example
2727 through her commitment to the greater good of the Lone Star
2828 State; in 2001, she received the inaugural Betty King Award for
2929 Legislative Staff Service; and
3030 WHEREAS, Following Lieutenant Governor Ratliff's retirement,
3131 Ms. Solomon served as East Texas outreach coordinator for
3232 then-state comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn; she later joined
3333 Eric Wright & Associates, a government relations consulting
3434 firm; over the years, she served as president of the chambers of
3535 commerce in both Mount Vernon and Mount Pleasant, and she was
3636 appointed by Governor Mark White to the Sulphur River Basin
3737 Authority; and
3838 WHEREAS, Vatra Solomon lived a caring and purposeful life
3939 dedicated to the well-being of her fellow Texans, and she will be
4040 remembered with deep admiration and affection by all who were
4141 fortunate enough to know her; now, therefore, be it
4242 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
4343 Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the memory of Vatra Grace
4444 Solomon and extend sincere condolences to all who mourn her
4545 passing; and, be it further
4646 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
4747 prepared for her family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns
4848 this day, it do so in memory of Vatra Grace Solomon.
