2	2	WHEREAS, The University of Texas Longhorn Alumni Band and
3	3	The University of Texas Longhorn Band have accepted an invitation
4	4	to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the invasion of Normandy,
5	5	in Normandy, France, on June 6, 2019; and
6	6	WHEREAS, The University of Texas Longhorn Alumni Band and
7	7	The University of Texas Longhorn Band have a distinguished
8	8	history of representing the university and the State of Texas,
9	9	and on this memorable and historic occasion, more than 550 alumni
10	10	band members and guests are participating to mark the most
11	11	celebrated World War II anniversary, which commemorates the
12	12	beginning of the end of Nazi control over Europe; and
13	13	WHEREAS, The University of Texas Longhorn Alumni Band was
14	14	selected because this group represents the best of American
15	15	culture, of patriotism, and of friendship among the neighbors,
16	16	friends, and allies of the United States of America; and
17	17	WHEREAS, The Longhorn Alumni Band will be honoring the
18	18	American and Allied forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in the
19	19	Battle of Normandy during the Allied offensive code-named
20	20	Operation Overlord, which launched the successful invasion of
21	21	German-occupied Western Europe during World War II on June 6,
22	22	1944; and
23	23	WHEREAS, The Longhorn Alumni Band will serve as the
24	24	ceremonial band at official D-Day services in France at the
25	25	Brittany American Cemetery and at the Normandy American Cemetery
26	26	overlooking Omaha Beach; and
27	27	WHEREAS, Longhorn Alumni Band member Kenny Bierschenk will
28	28	play "Taps" on a trumpet which survived the Normandy invasion and
29	29	was presented to the alumni band by the grandson of Sergeant
30	30	Richard Wank, who took part in the World War II invasion and was
31	31	the first person off the landing craft and only survivor of his
32	32	Higgins boat unit; and
33	33	WHEREAS, The Longhorn Alumni Band will participate as the
34	34	final band in the Musical Salute to Liberation in the June 8, 2019,
35	35	celebration parade in Sainte-Mère-Église, which is traditionally
36	36	attended by citizens from around the world who celebrate and show
37	37	their gratitude for the liberation of France; and
38	38	WHEREAS, The University of Texas Longhorn Alumni Band is
39	39	over 4,000 members strong and enjoys worldwide renown; it was
40	40	established in 1964 by several alumni band members in
41	41	coordination with Vincent R. DiNino, Director Emeritus of the
42	42	Longhorn Band, and his wife, Jane DiNino, to continue the
43	43	long-standing traditions of the Longhorn Band, and it provides
44	44	scholarships, endowments, and mentorship for the benefit of
45	45	current Longhorn Band members; now, therefore, be it
46	46	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
47	47	Legislature, hereby recognize and commend The University of
48	48	Texas Longhorn Alumni Band and The University of Texas Longhorn
49	49	Band for representing the United States of America and the State
50	50	of Texas on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the D-Day
51	51	invasion of Normandy in France.
