11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 743
22 WHEREAS, The University of Texas Longhorn Alumni Band and
33 The University of Texas Longhorn Band have accepted an invitation
44 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the invasion of Normandy,
55 in Normandy, France, on June 6, 2019; and
66 WHEREAS, The University of Texas Longhorn Alumni Band and
77 The University of Texas Longhorn Band have a distinguished
88 history of representing the university and the State of Texas,
99 and on this memorable and historic occasion, more than 550 alumni
1010 band members and guests are participating to mark the most
1111 celebrated World War II anniversary, which commemorates the
1212 beginning of the end of Nazi control over Europe; and
1313 WHEREAS, The University of Texas Longhorn Alumni Band was
1414 selected because this group represents the best of American
1515 culture, of patriotism, and of friendship among the neighbors,
1616 friends, and allies of the United States of America; and
1717 WHEREAS, The Longhorn Alumni Band will be honoring the
1818 American and Allied forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in the
1919 Battle of Normandy during the Allied offensive code-named
2020 Operation Overlord, which launched the successful invasion of
2121 German-occupied Western Europe during World War II on June 6,
2222 1944; and
2323 WHEREAS, The Longhorn Alumni Band will serve as the
2424 ceremonial band at official D-Day services in France at the
2525 Brittany American Cemetery and at the Normandy American Cemetery
2626 overlooking Omaha Beach; and
2727 WHEREAS, Longhorn Alumni Band member Kenny Bierschenk will
2828 play "Taps" on a trumpet which survived the Normandy invasion and
2929 was presented to the alumni band by the grandson of Sergeant
3030 Richard Wank, who took part in the World War II invasion and was
3131 the first person off the landing craft and only survivor of his
3232 Higgins boat unit; and
3333 WHEREAS, The Longhorn Alumni Band will participate as the
3434 final band in the Musical Salute to Liberation in the June 8, 2019,
3535 celebration parade in Sainte-Mère-Église, which is traditionally
3636 attended by citizens from around the world who celebrate and show
3737 their gratitude for the liberation of France; and
3838 WHEREAS, The University of Texas Longhorn Alumni Band is
3939 over 4,000 members strong and enjoys worldwide renown; it was
4040 established in 1964 by several alumni band members in
4141 coordination with Vincent R. DiNino, Director Emeritus of the
4242 Longhorn Band, and his wife, Jane DiNino, to continue the
4343 long-standing traditions of the Longhorn Band, and it provides
4444 scholarships, endowments, and mentorship for the benefit of
4545 current Longhorn Band members; now, therefore, be it
4646 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
4747 Legislature, hereby recognize and commend The University of
4848 Texas Longhorn Alumni Band and The University of Texas Longhorn
4949 Band for representing the United States of America and the State
5050 of Texas on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the D-Day
5151 invasion of Normandy in France.
