1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 75
2	2	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	3	recognize Stephen Willeford of Sutherland Springs for his
4	4	courageous actions and resolve in the midst of gravely dangerous
5	5	circumstances; and
6	6	WHEREAS, On November 5, 2017, the community of Sutherland
7	7	Springs experienced great tragedy and heartbreak when a gunman
8	8	opened fire on worshippers at the First Baptist Church; the
9	9	gunman killed 26 people and wounded 20 others; and
10	10	WHEREAS, Mr. Willeford, whose home is across the street
11	11	from the church, heard the gunfire and took immediate action;
12	12	disregarding his own safety, he grabbed his rifle and ran into
13	13	the street, where he encountered the gunman exiting the church,
14	14	and the two began exchanging gunfire; Mr. Willeford wounded the
15	15	gunman, who then got into his vehicle and fled the scene; and
16	16	WHEREAS, Mr. Willeford quickly engaged the assistance of
17	17	Johnnie Langendorff, who had stopped at an intersection while
18	18	driving near the scene of the shooting, and they embarked on a
19	19	high-speed chase in Johnnie's truck in pursuit of the gunman; the
20	20	gunman eventually ran off the road and wrecked his vehicle before
21	21	taking his own life; and
22	22	WHEREAS, Stephen Willeford's quick thinking and decisive
23	23	actions likely saved the lives of others the gunman might have
24	24	targeted; his courage under extreme pressure has served as an
25	25	inspiration to his fellow Texans and to citizens across the
26	26	country, and it is truly fitting that he receive special
27	27	recognition for his brave conduct; now, therefore, be it
28	28	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
29	29	Legislature, hereby commend Stephen Willeford on his selfless
30	30	and heroic actions in the wake of a horrific mass shooting and
31	31	community tragedy; and, be it further
32	32	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
33	33	him as an expression of highest regard from the Texas Senate.
