1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 762
2	2	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	3	recognize Chief Justice Nathan L. Hecht for 30 years of
4	4	distinguished service on the Texas Supreme Court; and
5	5	WHEREAS, The longest-serving supreme court justice in
6	6	Texas history, Chief Justice Hecht ascended to Place 6 on the
7	7	state's highest court on January 1, 1989, and he has presided as
8	8	the 27th chief justice since October of 2013; and
9	9	WHEREAS, During his three decades of judicial leadership,
10	10	Justice Hecht has reshaped Texas courts to be more conservative
11	11	in addressing civil litigation and more progressive in matters
12	12	relating to social justice, yet his influence extends well beyond
13	13	jurisprudence; and
14	14	WHEREAS, The esteemed justice is noted for pioneering new
15	15	paths for court efficiency, modernizing rules and procedure,
16	16	advocating affordable legal services for those whose access is
17	17	restricted, and actively challenging unconscious bias in the
18	18	courts to improve public trust; and
19	19	WHEREAS, Chief Justice Hecht was the first registered
20	20	Republican to be elected to the Texas Supreme Court since the
21	21	Reconstruction Era, and many legal historians agree that no
22	22	single jurist has had more influence on the Texas legal system;
23	23	his landmark opinions have been referenced in courts throughout
24	24	the nation, and his continued leadership will benefit citizens
25	25	for generations to come; now, therefore, be it
26	26	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
27	27	Legislature, hereby commend Chief Justice Nathan L. Hecht on his
28	28	30th anniversary as a Texas Supreme Court justice and extend to
29	29	him best wishes for the future; and, be it further
30	30	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
31	31	him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
