55 WHEREAS, Trailblazing scientist Dr. Waun Ki Hong died on
66 January 2, 2019, at the age of 76, bringing a great loss to
77 oncological medicine and to his colleagues at The University of
88 Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center; and
99 WHEREAS, The son of Sung Koo Hong and Bok Young Shin, Ki
1010 Hong was born in Korea on August 13, 1942; he graduated from
1111 Yonsei University College of Medicine and served as a flight
1212 surgeon in the South Korean Air Force during the Vietnam War; on
1313 September 6, 1969, he married the love of his life, Mi Hwa, and
1414 the following year, they immigrated to the United States; the
1515 couple were blessed with two sons, Ed and Burt, and they later
1616 welcomed into their family four grandchildren, Elizabeth,
1717 Daniel, William, and Vivienne; and
1818 WHEREAS, Dr. Hong completed his internship at
1919 Bronx-Lebanon Hospital in New York City, his residency at the
2020 Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Boston, and a fellowship at
2121 Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York; returning to
2222 the VA Medical Center as chief of medical oncology, he helped
2323 establish its training program and led a series of landmark
2424 laryngeal cancer trials that transformed treatment of the
2525 disease and laid a foundation for organ preservation in numerous
2626 cancer types; he joined MD Anderson in 1984 as section chief in
2727 head and neck medical oncology; earning recognition as "the
2828 father of chemoprevention," he conducted research leading to
2929 targeted therapies, allowing the identification and treatment of
3030 people at high risk of cancer and the fine-tuning of therapies
3131 for individuals; he led the Division of Cancer Medicine from 2001
3232 until his retirement in 2014 and then continued to serve as a
3333 special advisor; and
3434 WHEREAS, Over the years, Dr. Hong authored nearly 700
3535 articles, edited 11 major books, and served on the editorial
3636 boards of 17 scientific journals; he received over $70 million in
3737 research funding, and he was recognized with numerous honors,
3838 including the American Cancer Society Medal of Honor, as well as
3939 awards from the American Association for Cancer Research, which
4040 he served as president, and the American Society of Clinical
4141 Oncology; he took greatest pride in having trained hundreds of
4242 oncologists, and in 2016, the AACR established the Waun Ki Hong
4343 Award for Outstanding Achievement in Translational and Clinical
4444 Cancer Research to encourage young scientists; and
4545 WHEREAS, Ki Hong's groundbreaking research has extended
4646 and improved the lives of countless cancer patients, and he has
4747 left a further legacy through the many scientists and physicians
4848 he mentored over the course of his accomplished career; now,
4949 therefore, be it
5050 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
5151 Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of Dr. Waun Ki Hong
5252 and extend sincere condolences to all who mourn his passing; and,
5353 be it further
5454 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
5555 prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns
5656 this day, it do so in memory of Dr. Waun Ki Hong.
