2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Proud representatives of Mineral Wells are |

3 | 3 | | gathering at the State Capitol in Austin on January 29, 2019; and |
---|
4 | 4 | | WHEREAS, First settled in 1877 by James and Amanda Lynch, |
---|
5 | 5 | | Mineral Wells is nestled in a valley among the hills of Palo Pinto |
---|
6 | 6 | | and Parker Counties; after drilling a well, Mr. and Mrs. Lynch |
---|
7 | 7 | | discovered that the unusual-tasting water coming from the source |
---|
8 | 8 | | seemed to have medicinal qualities; news spread quickly about the |
---|
9 | 9 | | miraculous "healing" water, and people came by the thousands to |
---|
10 | 10 | | try it for themselves; the famed Crazy Well was dug in 1885, and |
---|
11 | 11 | | soon thereafter, the town became a booming center for wellness |
---|
12 | 12 | | and recreation; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, By 1920, the city had 400 mineral wells, and |
---|
14 | 14 | | tourists from around the world were traveling to "the South's |
---|
15 | 15 | | greatest health resort" to enjoy its bathhouses, drinking |
---|
16 | 16 | | pavilions, and spas; the Baker Hotel opened in 1929 as an |
---|
17 | 17 | | international retreat destination, and in its heyday, it was |
---|
18 | 18 | | frequented by the country's most glamorous and well-known |
---|
19 | 19 | | celebrities, including Clark Gable, Carole Lombard, Judy |
---|
20 | 20 | | Garland, Mary Martin, Will Rogers, and the Three Stooges; |
---|
21 | 21 | | moreover, the city's population continued to grow in the mid-20th |
---|
22 | 22 | | century due to the military presence at Camp Wolters, which in |
---|
23 | 23 | | more recent years has served as a base for the United States Army, |
---|
24 | 24 | | Air Force, and National Guard; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Today Mineral Wells is home to about 16,000 |
---|
26 | 26 | | people; the city remains a center for retirement, health, and |
---|
27 | 27 | | recreation, and notable attractions include the beautiful Clark |
---|
28 | 28 | | Gardens, Mineral Wells Fossil Park, and Lake Mineral Wells State |
---|
29 | 29 | | Park; furthermore, visitors can still order Crazy Water at the |
---|
30 | 30 | | historic Famous Mineral Water Company and celebrate the area's |
---|
31 | 31 | | heritage at the annual Crazy Water Festival; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, With a colorful history and a unique small-town |
---|
33 | 33 | | atmosphere, Mineral Wells is a wonderful community in which to |

34 | 34 | | live and work, and its residents may indeed take justifiable |
---|
35 | 35 | | pride in the place they call home; now, therefore, be it |
---|
36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
---|
37 | 37 | | Legislature, hereby honor the citizens of Mineral Wells who are |
---|
38 | 38 | | visiting the State Capitol on January 29, 2019, and extend to them |
---|
39 | 39 | | sincere best wishes for a meaningful and memorable day in Austin. |
