11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 802
22 WHEREAS, The prosperity of the Lone Star State has been
33 greatly influenced by family farming and ranching, and the
44 Justiss family of Morris County have been officially recognized
55 as heirs to this proud tradition with the acceptance of the
66 Justiss Ranch into the state's Family Land Heritage Program in
77 2018; and
88 WHEREAS, Sponsored by the Texas Department of Agriculture,
99 this program honors farms and ranches that have been in
1010 continuous agricultural operation by the same family for a
1111 century or more; established in 1868, the Justiss Ranch is
1212 currently owned and operated by Sheila Justiss and Madron Justiss
1313 Hartley; and
1414 WHEREAS, John W. Justiss was a native of Georgia who
1515 traveled to California by way of Panama, took part in the Gold
1616 Rush, and eventually settled in Texas; in 1868, he and his wife,
1717 Rachel Yancey Justiss, bought 146 acres in northeast Texas, where
1818 they raised cattle and sheep as well as sweet potatoes, corn, and
1919 sugar cane; and
2020 WHEREAS, The land was handed down to John and Rachel's son
2121 Joe Justiss, who raised 11 children there with his wife, Willie
2222 Johnson Justiss; the family grew sweet potatoes, and Justiss Yams
2323 became a popular brand throughout East Texas and as far afield as
2424 California; Joe's son Lloyd Justiss went on to become president
2525 of the Texas Sweet Potato Growers Association; and
2626 WHEREAS, In the 1960s, Joe's son Adron Justiss became owner
2727 of the land and turned it into a successful cattle ranch, and he
2828 and his wife, Mae Copeland Justiss, were active in the Northeast
2929 Texas Hereford Association; today, the ranch is overseen by
3030 Adron's daughters Sheila and Madron, who have continued to
3131 skillfully manage the family's herd of Registered Polled
3232 Herefords and Registered Black Salers; and
3333 WHEREAS, In preserving their property as a working ranch,
3434 Ms. Justiss and Ms. Hartley are making their own contribution to
3535 their family's legacy, and it is indeed fitting that they be
3636 honored for their outstanding stewardship; now, therefore, be it
3737 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
3838 Legislature, hereby congratulate Sheila Justiss and Madron
3939 Justiss Hartley on the induction of the Justiss Ranch into the
4040 Texas Department of Agriculture Family Land Heritage Program and
4141 extend to them sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be
4242 it further
4343 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
4444 prepared for Ms. Justiss and Ms. Hartley as an expression of high
4545 regard by the Texas Senate.
