1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 802
2	2	WHEREAS, The prosperity of the Lone Star State has been
3	3	greatly influenced by family farming and ranching, and the
4	4	Justiss family of Morris County have been officially recognized
5	5	as heirs to this proud tradition with the acceptance of the
6	6	Justiss Ranch into the state's Family Land Heritage Program in
7	7	2018; and
8	8	WHEREAS, Sponsored by the Texas Department of Agriculture,
9	9	this program honors farms and ranches that have been in
10	10	continuous agricultural operation by the same family for a
11	11	century or more; established in 1868, the Justiss Ranch is
12	12	currently owned and operated by Sheila Justiss and Madron Justiss
13	13	Hartley; and
14	14	WHEREAS, John W. Justiss was a native of Georgia who
15	15	traveled to California by way of Panama, took part in the Gold
16	16	Rush, and eventually settled in Texas; in 1868, he and his wife,
17	17	Rachel Yancey Justiss, bought 146 acres in northeast Texas, where
18	18	they raised cattle and sheep as well as sweet potatoes, corn, and
19	19	sugar cane; and
20	20	WHEREAS, The land was handed down to John and Rachel's son
21	21	Joe Justiss, who raised 11 children there with his wife, Willie
22	22	Johnson Justiss; the family grew sweet potatoes, and Justiss Yams
23	23	became a popular brand throughout East Texas and as far afield as
24	24	California; Joe's son Lloyd Justiss went on to become president
25	25	of the Texas Sweet Potato Growers Association; and
26	26	WHEREAS, In the 1960s, Joe's son Adron Justiss became owner
27	27	of the land and turned it into a successful cattle ranch, and he
28	28	and his wife, Mae Copeland Justiss, were active in the Northeast
29	29	Texas Hereford Association; today, the ranch is overseen by
30	30	Adron's daughters Sheila and Madron, who have continued to
31	31	skillfully manage the family's herd of Registered Polled
32	32	Herefords and Registered Black Salers; and
33	33	WHEREAS, In preserving their property as a working ranch,
34	34	Ms. Justiss and Ms. Hartley are making their own contribution to
35	35	their family's legacy, and it is indeed fitting that they be
36	36	honored for their outstanding stewardship; now, therefore, be it
37	37	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
38	38	Legislature, hereby congratulate Sheila Justiss and Madron
39	39	Justiss Hartley on the induction of the Justiss Ranch into the
40	40	Texas Department of Agriculture Family Land Heritage Program and
41	41	extend to them sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be
42	42	it further
43	43	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
44	44	prepared for Ms. Justiss and Ms. Hartley as an expression of high
45	45	regard by the Texas Senate.
