11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 814
22 WHEREAS, Elaine Mendoza was elected chair of The Texas A&M
33 University System Board of Regents on May 17, 2019, becoming the
44 second woman and first Hispanic to serve in that position; and
55 WHEREAS, Appointed to the board by Governor Rick Perry in
66 2011, Ms. Mendoza was reappointed six years later by Governor
77 Greg Abbott; she previously served two terms as vice chair, and
88 she is serving her fourth term as chair of the Committee on
99 Academic and Student Affairs; in addition, she is a member of the
1010 Committee on Audit and a liaison to the Texas Higher Education
1111 Coordinating Board, and she also serves as a member of the
1212 University Lands Advisory Board; and
1313 WHEREAS, Ms. Mendoza has brought to the board of regents a
1414 wealth of experience gained on the Texas Higher Education
1515 Coordinating Board, the Commission for a College Ready Texas, and
1616 Governor Perry's Special Commission on 21st Century Colleges and
1717 Universities; at the national level, she chaired the Commission
1818 on the Advancement of Women and Minorities in Science,
1919 Engineering and Technology Development; and
2020 WHEREAS, An alumna of Texas A&M, Ms. Mendoza is an admired
2121 leader in the biotechnology industry, and she currently serves as
2222 president and CEO of Conceptual MindWorks, the San Antonio-based
2323 company she founded in 1990; over the years, she has given
2424 generously of her time and talents to promote the expansion of
2525 educational opportunities, health care, and economic growth in
2626 the Alamo City; she has served as chair of the Early Childhood
2727 Education Municipal Development Corporation, as chair of the
2828 board of the CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System, and as co-chair
2929 of the P16 Council Formation Committee; in 2013, she received the
3030 Outstanding Alumni Award from the Dwight Look College of
3131 Engineering at Texas A&M, and the following year, she was
3232 recognized with the Women's Legacy Award from the Aggie Women
3333 Network; and
3434 WHEREAS, In taking on this new challenge, Elaine Mendoza
3535 has demonstrated a profound commitment to advancing the
3636 important goals of one of the largest systems of higher education
3737 in the nation; now, therefore, be it
3838 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
3939 Legislature, hereby congratulate Elaine Mendoza on her election
4040 as chair of The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents and
4141 extend to her sincere best wishes for a successful tenure; and,
4242 be it further
4343 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
4444 prepared for Ms. Mendoza as an expression of high regard by the
4545 Texas Senate.
