55 WHEREAS, University of Texas sports fans bade farewell to a
66 renowned college baseball coach with the passing of August Edmun
77 Garrido Jr. on March 15, 2018, at the age of 79; and
88 WHEREAS, Augie Garrido was born in Vallejo, California, on
99 February 6, 1939; a member of the Fresno State University
1010 baseball team, he was named all-conference and competed in the
1111 1959 College World Series; following graduation in 1961, he
1212 signed with the Cleveland Indians and played six seasons in the
1313 minor leagues; and
1414 WHEREAS, After launching his coaching career in 1966 at
1515 Sierra High School in Tollhouse, California, Mr. Garrido rose to
1616 the college ranks when he became head coach at San Francisco State
1717 University in 1969, and he took charge of the Cal Poly program the
1818 following year; named head coach at California State University,
1919 Fullerton, in 1973, he produced three College World Series
2020 champions in 21 total years with the Titans, and he also won two
2121 Big 10 Conference titles at the University of Illinois; and
2222 WHEREAS, Coach Garrido brought his distinctive coaching
2323 style to The University of Texas at Austin in 1997; under his
2424 guidance, the Longhorns broke a six-year drought with a berth in
2525 the 2000 College World Series and went on to make seven
2626 additional College World Series appearances and to claim two
2727 national championships; UT also won seven Big 12 Conference
2828 titles during his tenure, and when he retired in 2016, he was
2929 college baseball's all-time winningest coach with 1,975
3030 victories; and
3131 WHEREAS, Credited with the development of 15 Major League
3232 Baseball first-round draft picks, Coach Garrido also mentored
3333 four National Players of the Year and 53 All-Americans over the
3434 course of his legendary career; moreover, he was a six-time
3535 National Coach of the Year and was inducted into the National
3636 College Baseball Hall of Fame and the Texas Sports Hall of
3737 Fame; and
3838 WHEREAS, Widely considered one of the greatest college
3939 baseball coaches of all time, Augie Garrido was beloved for his
4040 wit, wisdom, and unique psychological approach to the game, and
4141 his myriad achievements will continue to be remembered and
4242 admired for many years to come; now, therefore, be it
4343 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
4444 Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of August Edmun
4545 Garrido Jr. and extend heartfelt sympathy to all those who mourn
4646 his passing; and, be it further
4747 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
4848 prepared for his family and that when the Senate adjourns this
4949 day, it do so in memory of Augie Garrido.
