6 | 6 | | renowned college baseball coach with the passing of August Edmun |

7 | 7 | | Garrido Jr. on March 15, 2018, at the age of 79; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Augie Garrido was born in Vallejo, California, on |
---|
9 | 9 | | February 6, 1939; a member of the Fresno State University |
---|
10 | 10 | | baseball team, he was named all-conference and competed in the |
---|
11 | 11 | | 1959 College World Series; following graduation in 1961, he |
---|
12 | 12 | | signed with the Cleveland Indians and played six seasons in the |
---|
13 | 13 | | minor leagues; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, After launching his coaching career in 1966 at |
---|
15 | 15 | | Sierra High School in Tollhouse, California, Mr. Garrido rose to |
---|
16 | 16 | | the college ranks when he became head coach at San Francisco State |
---|
17 | 17 | | University in 1969, and he took charge of the Cal Poly program the |
---|
18 | 18 | | following year; named head coach at California State University, |
---|
19 | 19 | | Fullerton, in 1973, he produced three College World Series |
---|
20 | 20 | | champions in 21 total years with the Titans, and he also won two |
---|
21 | 21 | | Big 10 Conference titles at the University of Illinois; and |

22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Coach Garrido brought his distinctive coaching |

23 | 23 | | style to The University of Texas at Austin in 1997; under his |

24 | 24 | | guidance, the Longhorns broke a six-year drought with a berth in |

25 | 25 | | the 2000 College World Series and went on to make seven |
---|
26 | 26 | | additional College World Series appearances and to claim two |
---|
27 | 27 | | national championships; UT also won seven Big 12 Conference |
---|
28 | 28 | | titles during his tenure, and when he retired in 2016, he was |

29 | 29 | | college baseball's all-time winningest coach with 1,975 |

31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Credited with the development of 15 Major League |

32 | 32 | | Baseball first-round draft picks, Coach Garrido also mentored |

38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, Widely considered one of the greatest college |

39 | 39 | | baseball coaches of all time, Augie Garrido was beloved for his |

40 | 40 | | wit, wisdom, and unique psychological approach to the game, and |

41 | 41 | | his myriad achievements will continue to be remembered and |
---|
42 | 42 | | admired for many years to come; now, therefore, be it |

43 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
---|
44 | 44 | | Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of August Edmun |
---|
45 | 45 | | Garrido Jr. and extend heartfelt sympathy to all those who mourn |
---|
46 | 46 | | his passing; and, be it further |

47 | 47 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |
