55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Efrain Jesus "E. J." Laurel, who died
77 January 3, 2019, at the age of 86; and
88 WHEREAS, E. J. Laurel was an exemplary citizen and a highly
99 respected law enforcement officer who was known for his courage,
1010 commitment to public service, and attention to detail; he was
1111 passionate about his work, and he had a positive impact on life in
1212 Laredo and across the Rio Grande Valley; and
1313 WHEREAS, He and his beloved wife, the late Alma Diana P.
1414 Laurel, were blessed with five children, Efrain Laurel Jr.,
1515 Araceli Vasquez, Carlos Laurel, Clarissa Elizondo, and Diedra
1616 Lizcano; his 14 grandchildren and his five great-grandchildren
1717 were a source of much pride and joy for him; and
1818 WHEREAS, A native of Laredo, E. J. Laurel began his 40-year
1919 career in law enforcement by serving as a United States customs
2020 agent; he later worked for a time with the Drug Enforcement
2121 Administration before becoming the Webb County Precinct 4
2222 constable; he concluded his career by serving as chief of the
2323 Laredo Police Department; and
2424 WHEREAS, Mr. Laurel held a master's degree in
2525 interdisciplinary studies, and he was noted for his exceptional
2626 memory for historical facts; he was a man of many interests and an
2727 avid baseball fan, and he took great joy in living each day to the
2828 fullest; and
2929 WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and
3030 grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be cherished
3131 forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it
3232 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
3333 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
3434 family of Efrain Jesus Laurel; and, be it further
3535 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3636 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
3737 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
3838 memory of E. J. Laurel.
