| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, A full and productive life drew to a close with |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | the death of Dr. Walton Richard Garner on December 9, 2018, at |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | the age of 82; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The son of Walton and Thelma Garner, Dick Garner |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | was born in Columbus, Ohio, on August 18, 1936; he grew up with a |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | sister, Lorelei, and graduated from Capital University and The |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Ohio State University College of Medicine; in addition, he held a |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | master's degree in administrative medicine, and he was board |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | certified in aerospace medicine, occupational medicine, and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | preventive medicine; during the Vietnam War era, he was a flight |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | surgeon in the Ohio Air National Guard, and he served a tour of |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | duty in Korea before completing his military service, having |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | attained the rank of major; he went on to become a flight surgeon |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | for the Apollo astronauts, and he later continued to practice |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | medicine as head of preventive medicine for The Ohio State |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | University and as corporate medical director for Ohio Bell |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Telephone; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Garner shared a rewarding marriage of 51 |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | years with his wife, Marilynn, and he saw his family grow to |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | include five children, Andrea Christgau and her husband, Jim, |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | David Garner and his wife, Kathy, Rich Garner and his wife, |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Renee, Susan Fallon and her husband, Patrick, and Robert Garner |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | and his wife, Jen, as well as 15 grandchildren; he also enjoyed |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | spending time with his nieces and nephews, and he was devoted to |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | the numerous dogs he owned over the years; Mr. Garner was very |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | active in the Methodist Church, and he traveled to New Guinea as a |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | medical missionary; for many years, he held a pilot's license, |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | and he was ever a loyal Ohio State fan; he formed numerous warm |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | friendships across the country, particularly through bridge club |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | and community theater; and |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, While the passing of Dick Garner brings great |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | sadness to his family and friends, his legacy will remain a |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | source of tremendous inspiration in the years to come; now, |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | therefore, be it |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the memory of Dr. Walton |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | Richard Garner and extend sincere condolences to all who mourn |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | his passing; and, be it further |
|---|
| 43 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |
|---|
| 44 | 44 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns |
|---|
| 45 | 45 | | this day, it do so in memory of Dr. Walton Richard Garner. |
