44 Walton Richard Garner
55 WHEREAS, A full and productive life drew to a close with
66 the death of Dr. Walton Richard Garner on December 9, 2018, at
77 the age of 82; and
88 WHEREAS, The son of Walton and Thelma Garner, Dick Garner
99 was born in Columbus, Ohio, on August 18, 1936; he grew up with a
1010 sister, Lorelei, and graduated from Capital University and The
1111 Ohio State University College of Medicine; in addition, he held a
1212 master's degree in administrative medicine, and he was board
1313 certified in aerospace medicine, occupational medicine, and
1414 preventive medicine; during the Vietnam War era, he was a flight
1515 surgeon in the Ohio Air National Guard, and he served a tour of
1616 duty in Korea before completing his military service, having
1717 attained the rank of major; he went on to become a flight surgeon
1818 for the Apollo astronauts, and he later continued to practice
1919 medicine as head of preventive medicine for The Ohio State
2020 University and as corporate medical director for Ohio Bell
2121 Telephone; and
2222 WHEREAS, Dr. Garner shared a rewarding marriage of 51
2323 years with his wife, Marilynn, and he saw his family grow to
2424 include five children, Andrea Christgau and her husband, Jim,
2525 David Garner and his wife, Kathy, Rich Garner and his wife,
2626 Renee, Susan Fallon and her husband, Patrick, and Robert Garner
2727 and his wife, Jen, as well as 15 grandchildren; he also enjoyed
2828 spending time with his nieces and nephews, and he was devoted to
2929 the numerous dogs he owned over the years; Mr. Garner was very
3030 active in the Methodist Church, and he traveled to New Guinea as a
3131 medical missionary; for many years, he held a pilot's license,
3232 and he was ever a loyal Ohio State fan; he formed numerous warm
3333 friendships across the country, particularly through bridge club
3434 and community theater; and
3535 WHEREAS, While the passing of Dick Garner brings great
3636 sadness to his family and friends, his legacy will remain a
3737 source of tremendous inspiration in the years to come; now,
3838 therefore, be it
3939 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
4040 Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the memory of Dr. Walton
4141 Richard Garner and extend sincere condolences to all who mourn
4242 his passing; and, be it further
4343 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
4444 prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns
4545 this day, it do so in memory of Dr. Walton Richard Garner.
