55 WHEREAS, A rich and purposeful life drew to a close with
66 the passing of Fred G. Rodriguez of San Antonio on May 18, 2019,
77 at the age of 79; and
88 WHEREAS, Born to Dr. Mamiliano Juan and Rebecca Garza
99 Rodriguez on October 10, 1939, in Rio Grande City, Fred Rodriguez
1010 grew up with five siblings, Evangeline, Judy, Jim, Dolores, and
1111 Marty; an alumnus of Texas A&M University, he went on to earn a
1212 juris doctor degree from The University of Texas at Austin and to
1313 serve in the United States Army; and
1414 WHEREAS, In the course of a successful career in law that
1515 spanned more than half a century, Mr. Rodriguez worked in the
1616 Bexar County Criminal District Attorney's Office and the United
1717 States Attorney's Office, where he was the first assistant for
1818 the Western District of Texas; in 1987, he became the first
1919 Hispanic to be elected Bexar County criminal district attorney;
2020 over the years, he received commendations from the United
2121 States Attorney General's Office, the United States Postal
2222 Service, and the FBI; and
2323 WHEREAS, In 1978, Mr. Rodriguez married the former Carolyn
2424 Walker, and the couple enjoyed four decades of love and
2525 companionship; Mr. Rodriguez took great pride in his two
2626 children, Sabrina and Travis, and he doted on his grandson,
2727 Frederic; a lifelong athlete, he competed in the Senior Olympics
2828 for many years; and
2929 WHEREAS, While the death of Fred Rodriguez brings
3030 immeasurable sorrow to his family and friends, he leaves behind a
3131 legacy that will long be treasured by all those who held him dear;
3232 now, therefore, be it
3333 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
3434 Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of Fred
3535 G. Rodriguez and extend sincere condolences to his loved ones;
3636 and, be it further
3737 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
3838 prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns
3939 this day, it do so in memory of Fred Rodriguez.
