| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | join the Texas Chapter of the Academic Language Therapy |

| 4 | 4 | | Association in recognizing February 5, 2019, as Dyslexia |

| 5 | 5 | | Awareness Day at the Capitol; and |

| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Academic Language Therapy Association is a |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | national organization that was founded in 1986 with the mission |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | of helping to provide high quality services for students with |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | dyslexia and related disorders; Texas ALTA consists of regional |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | chapters across the state, and it provides support to the |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | licensed dyslexia therapists and practitioners who educate and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | serve Texas families affected by dyslexia; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, One in five students in the country has a |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | language-based disability, with dyslexia being the most common, |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | but the 2014 Public Education Information Management System data |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | indicate a wide disparity in identification rates across Texas |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | school districts, which demonstrates a need for better awareness |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | of diagnosis and for improved access to language therapy for |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | affected students; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, The Texas Chapter of the Academic Language |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Therapy Association provides information and guidance to the |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | State Board of Education for updating the Texas Dyslexia Handbook |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | and has had a profound impact on the lives of Texas students with |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | dyslexia and related disorders, and it is truly fitting that the |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | organization receive special recognition for its invaluable |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | services; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Legislature, hereby welcome the delegates from the Texas Chapter |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | of the Academic Language Therapy Association to Austin and extend |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | to all best wishes for a productive Dyslexia Awareness Day at the |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Capitol; and, be it further |
