44 John Weldon Berry Sr.
55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of John Weldon Berry Sr., who died
77 January 18, 2019, at the age of 78; and
88 WHEREAS, John Berry was born to Annie Glover Jones and John
99 Jones on August 10, 1940, in Tyler, Texas; he graduated from
1010 James Madison High School in Dallas; and
1111 WHEREAS, John attended Prairie View A&M University, where
1212 he served as president of his 1962 graduating class and earned a
1313 bachelor of science degree in business administration; he
1414 continued his higher education studies at East Texas State
1515 University and earned a master's degree; in 1968, he joined the
1616 Theta Alpha chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated,
1717 and he was an active member who worked with the Omega Youth group
1818 for several years; in 2018, he was recognized as the 81st Grand
1919 Conclave for his 50 years of devotion to the fraternity; and
2020 WHEREAS, John worked for 38 years as a professor at El
2121 Centro College, and he was honored on numerous occasions for his
2222 dedication to the teaching profession and to his community; in
2323 2006, he was awarded the Miles Production Company Outstanding
2424 Faculty Award for his excellence as a teacher with the Dallas
2525 County Community College District; and
2626 WHEREAS, A loving family man, John shared 55 years of
2727 marriage with Deralyn Gregory Berry, and they were blessed with
2828 two children; he cherished his grandchildren and held dear the
2929 bonds he shared with many of his extended family members; and
3030 WHEREAS, John Berry was a faithful member of Saint John
3131 Missionary Baptist Church in Dallas for more than 50 years, and
3232 he served the congregation as a deacon, Sunday school teacher,
3333 and choir member; he was a trusted mentor and friend to many, and
3434 he will long be remembered with respect and admiration by all who
3535 were privileged to share in his life; now, therefore, be it
3636 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
3737 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
3838 family of John Weldon Berry Sr.; and, be it further
3939 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4040 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4141 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4242 memory of John Berry.
