5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
---|
6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of John Weldon Berry Sr., who died |
---|
7 | 7 | | January 18, 2019, at the age of 78; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, John Berry was born to Annie Glover Jones and John |
---|
9 | 9 | | Jones on August 10, 1940, in Tyler, Texas; he graduated from |
---|
10 | 10 | | James Madison High School in Dallas; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, John attended Prairie View A&M University, where |
---|
12 | 12 | | he served as president of his 1962 graduating class and earned a |
---|
13 | 13 | | bachelor of science degree in business administration; he |
---|
14 | 14 | | continued his higher education studies at East Texas State |
---|
15 | 15 | | University and earned a master's degree; in 1968, he joined the |
---|
16 | 16 | | Theta Alpha chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated, |
---|
17 | 17 | | and he was an active member who worked with the Omega Youth group |
---|
18 | 18 | | for several years; in 2018, he was recognized as the 81st Grand |
---|
19 | 19 | | Conclave for his 50 years of devotion to the fraternity; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, John worked for 38 years as a professor at El |
---|
21 | 21 | | Centro College, and he was honored on numerous occasions for his |
---|
22 | 22 | | dedication to the teaching profession and to his community; in |
---|
23 | 23 | | 2006, he was awarded the Miles Production Company Outstanding |
---|
24 | 24 | | Faculty Award for his excellence as a teacher with the Dallas |
---|
25 | 25 | | County Community College District; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, A loving family man, John shared 55 years of |
---|
27 | 27 | | marriage with Deralyn Gregory Berry, and they were blessed with |
---|
28 | 28 | | two children; he cherished his grandchildren and held dear the |
---|
29 | 29 | | bonds he shared with many of his extended family members; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, John Berry was a faithful member of Saint John |
---|
31 | 31 | | Missionary Baptist Church in Dallas for more than 50 years, and |
---|
32 | 32 | | he served the congregation as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, |
---|
33 | 33 | | and choir member; he was a trusted mentor and friend to many, and |
---|
34 | 34 | | he will long be remembered with respect and admiration by all who |
---|
35 | 35 | | were privileged to share in his life; now, therefore, be it |
---|
36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
---|
37 | 37 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
38 | 38 | | family of John Weldon Berry Sr.; and, be it further |
---|
39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
40 | 40 | | his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
41 | 41 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
---|
42 | 42 | | memory of John Berry. |
