1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 97
2	2	WHEREAS, Aggies and Longhorns will unite today at the State
3	3	Capitol to celebrate Orange and Maroon Legislative Day 2019 and
4	4	showcase how higher education benefits the State of Texas; and
5	5	WHEREAS, There are nearly 1,000,000 alumni from the two
6	6	universities, and Texas A&M University and The University of
7	7	Texas at Austin have a combined annual enrollment of more than
8	8	115,000 students, and award more than 27,000 degrees each year;
9	9	both universities remain committed to ensuring an accessible and
10	10	affordable hands-on education for generations of future educators,
11	11	small business owners, farmers, doctors, and leaders; and
12	12	WHEREAS, Texas A&M University and The University of Texas
13	13	at Austin are renowned for their life-changing research, and the
14	14	teaching and research missions of both institutions benefit the
15	15	State of Texas by advancing medical breakthroughs and overall
16	16	quality of life; and
17	17	WHEREAS, Researchers at Texas A&M University and The
18	18	University of Texas at Austin discover and innovate; together,
19	19	they have more than 1,500 patents; both universities drive
20	20	economic prosperity in their respective regions and in the State
21	21	of Texas by supporting the work that gives rise to patents,
22	22	grants, corporate start-ups, and numerous other enterprises;
23	23	investment in these institutions ensures a sustainable Texas
24	24	economy and an educated workforce; and
25	25	WHEREAS, Both universities serve as centers for the arts
26	26	and culture, inspiring Texans to take part in the visual and
27	27	performing arts and other creative endeavors; both institutions
28	28	have excellent museums and libraries for Texans to enjoy,
29	29	including the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum and the
30	30	Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum; both institutions also
31	31	serve as flagships for athletics and physical education,
32	32	encouraging Texans to participate in physical activity and to
33	33	support the student-athletes that represent the state in
34	34	competition across the nation; and
35	35	WHEREAS, The universities' faculties feature Nobel laureates
36	36	and nationally recognized scholars, and the student bodies
37	37	include National Merit scholars, Rhodes scholars, Olympic gold
38	38	medalists, veterans, and many promising students who are
39	39	committed to advancing the Lone Star State; in addition, the
40	40	universities offer an amazing range of postgraduate opportunities
41	41	through nearly 500 graduate degree programs; and
42	42	WHEREAS, Texas A&M University and The University of Texas
43	43	at Austin are both recognized as Tier One public research
44	44	institutions as defined by the Texas Higher Education
45	45	Coordinating Board and are both members of the prestigious
46	46	Association of American Universities; and
47	47	WHEREAS, Texas A&M University and The University of Texas
48	48	at Austin have established themselves as preeminent institutions
49	49	of higher education on the state, national, and international
50	50	levels, and all Texans receive the benefits from these two
51	51	exceptional state university systems; now, therefore, be it
52	52	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
53	53	Legislature, hereby recognize February 5, 2019, as Orange and
54	54	Maroon Legislative Day and commend alumni from Texas A&M
55	55	University and The University of Texas at Austin for their
56	56	commitment to promoting higher education in the Lone Star State;
57	57	and, be it further
58	58	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
59	59	honor of this special occasion.
