4	10		AN ACT
5	11		relating to the participation of the medical school at the
6	12		University of Houston and the college of osteopathic medicine at
7	13		Sam Houston State University in the Joint Admission Medical
8	14		Program.
9	15		BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
10	16		SECTION 1. Section 51.821(4), Education Code, is amended to
11	17		read as follows:
12	18		(4) "Participating medical school" means each of the
13	19		following entities:
14	20		(A) the medical school at The University of Texas
15	21		Health Science Center at Houston;
16	22		(B) the medical school at The University of Texas
17	23		Southwestern Medical Center;
18	24		(C) the medical school at The University of Texas
19	25		Health Science Center at San Antonio;
20	26		(D) the medical school at The University of Texas
21	27		Medical Branch at Galveston;
22	28		(E) the medical school at the Texas Tech
23	29		University Health Sciences Center at Lubbock;
24	30		(F) the medical school at the Texas Tech
25	31		University Health Sciences Center at El Paso;
26	32		(G) the Baylor College of Medicine;
27	33		(H) the college of osteopathic medicine at the
28	34		University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth;
29	35		(I) the medical school at The Texas A&M
30	36		University System Health Science Center;
31	37		(J) the medical school at The University of Texas
32	38		at Austin; [and]
33	39		(K) the medical school at The University of Texas
34	40		Rio Grande Valley;
35	41		(L) the medical school at the University of
36	42		Houston; and
37	43		(M) the college of osteopathic medicine at Sam
38	44		Houston State University.
39	45		SECTION 2. (a) As soon as practicable after the effective
40	46		date of this Act, the medical school at the University of Houston
41	47		and the college of osteopathic medicine at Sam Houston State
42	48		University each shall:
43	49		(1) enter into the agreement with the Joint Admission
44	50		Medical Program Council required by Section 51.829, Education Code;
45	51		and
46	52		(2) select an appropriate faculty member to represent
47	53		the respective medical school on the council.
48	54		(b) The medical school at the University of Houston and the
49	55		college of osteopathic medicine at Sam Houston State University
50	56		each shall provide internships and mentoring under the Joint
51	57		Admission Medical Program as appropriate beginning not later than
52	58		the 2022-2023 academic year, but are not required before the
53	59		2023-2024 academic year to admit participating students to the
54	60		school or college under the program.
55	61		SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
56	62		a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
57	63		provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
58	64		Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
59	65		Act takes effect September 1, 2021.
