85 AN ACT
9- relating to authorizing certain joint graduate degree programs
10- between The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston
11- and The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.
6+ Relating to the consolidation of certain graduate programs of The
7+ University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and The
8+ University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
129 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
13- SECTION 1. Section 73.102(b), Education Code, is amended to
14- read as follows:
10+ SECTION 1. Subtitle C, Title 3, Subsection 73.102 Education
11+ Code, is amended by adding subsection (3) to read as follows:
12+ Sec. 73.102. PURPOSE; DEGREE PROGRAMS. (a) The
13+ institution and its substations shall be devoted to the diagnosis,
14+ teaching, study, prevention, and treatment of neoplastic and allied
15+ diseases.
1516 (b) If the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board
1617 determines that the role and mission of the institution should be
1718 changed to include degree-granting authority, the board of regents
1819 may:
1920 (1) prescribe courses and conduct allied health
2021 professional degree programs related to the purposes of the
21- institution described by Subsection (a); and
22+ institution described by Subsection (a); [and]
2223 (2) jointly prescribe courses and jointly conduct
2324 graduate programs at the master's and doctoral levels related to
24- those purposes with:
25- (A) The University of Texas Health Science Center
25+ those purposes with The University of Texas Health Science Center
2626 at Houston Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences; and
27- (B) The University of Texas Health Science Center
28- at Houston, with respect to graduate programs separately
29- established at the health science center and related to the broad
30- fields encompassed in population and public health.
27+ (3) jointly prescribe courses and jointly conduct
28+ graduate programs with The University of Texas Health Science
29+ Center at Houston, including educational programs at the master's
30+ and doctoral levels related to the broad fields encompassed in
31+ population and public health.
32+ (c) The degree programs to be offered under Subsection (b)
33+ are subject to approval by the coordinating board.
3134 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
3235 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
3336 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
3437 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
3538 Act takes effect September 1, 2021.
