15 | 10 | | SECTION 1. Section 3104.002, Government Code, is amended to |
---|
16 | 11 | | read as follows: |

17 | 12 | | Sec. 3104.002. DESIGNATING POET LAUREATE, STATE MUSICIANS |
---|
18 | 13 | | [MUSICIAN], AND STATE ARTISTS. (a) The committee shall designate: |

19 | 14 | | (1) a Texas poet laureate; |
---|
20 | 15 | | (2) a Texas state musician for the classical genre; |
---|
21 | 16 | | (3) a Texas state musician for the nonclassical genre; |
---|
22 | 17 | | (4) [(3)] a Texas state artist for two-dimensional |
---|
23 | 18 | | media; and |
---|
24 | 19 | | (5) [(4)] a Texas state artist for three-dimensional |
---|
25 | 20 | | media. |
---|
26 | 21 | | (b) The committee shall choose the poet laureate, state |
---|
27 | 22 | | musicians [musician], and state artists from a list of persons |
---|
28 | 23 | | submitted by the commission. |

39 | 34 | | (a) The commission shall solicit nominations from the arts |
---|
40 | 35 | | and cultural community for the poet laureate, state musicians |
---|
41 | 36 | | [musician], and state artists. The commission shall use the |
---|
42 | 37 | | commission's Texas Cultural & Arts Network, the media, public |
---|
43 | 38 | | meetings, newsletters, the Writer's League of Texas, and other |
---|
44 | 39 | | appropriate methods to distribute information about the nomination |
---|
45 | 40 | | process. |
---|
46 | 41 | | (c) The commission may assemble a group of artists, |
---|
47 | 42 | | musicians, writers, scholars, and other appropriate experts in the |
---|
48 | 43 | | fields of literature, music, and visual arts to: |
---|
49 | 44 | | (1) review the submissions from the nominated poets, |
---|
50 | 45 | | musicians, and artists; and |
---|
51 | 46 | | (2) provide advice and recommendations to the |
---|
52 | 47 | | commission on who should be considered for designation as poet |
---|
53 | 48 | | laureate, state musicians [musician], and state artists. |
---|
54 | 49 | | SECTION 5. Section 3104.005, Government Code, is amended to |
---|
55 | 50 | | read as follows: |
---|
56 | 51 | | Sec. 3104.005. DESIGNATION CEREMONY. The governor and |
---|
57 | 52 | | members of the committee shall honor the persons designated as poet |
---|
58 | 53 | | laureate, state musicians [musician], and state artists in a |
---|
59 | 54 | | ceremony at the Capitol. |
---|
60 | 55 | | SECTION 6. Section 3104.006, Government Code, is amended to |
---|
61 | 56 | | read as follows: |
---|
62 | 57 | | Sec. 3104.006. DURATION OF DESIGNATION. A person |
---|
63 | 58 | | designated as the poet laureate, a [the] state musician, or a state |
---|
64 | 59 | | artist retains the designation for one year from the date of the |
---|
65 | 60 | | designation ceremony. |
---|
66 | 61 | | SECTION 7. Section 3104.007, Government Code, is amended to |
---|
67 | 62 | | read as follows: |
---|
68 | 63 | | Sec. 3104.007. PAY AND EMOLUMENTS PROHIBITED. A person |
---|
69 | 64 | | designated as the poet laureate, a [the] state musician, or a state |
---|
70 | 65 | | artist does not receive any pay or emolument based on that |
---|
71 | 66 | | designation. |
---|
72 | 67 | | SECTION 8. This Act takes effect September 1, 2021. |
