66 AN ACT
77 relating to county jailer training regarding interacting with a
88 person with an intellectual or developmental disability.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Subchapter F, Chapter 1701, Occupations Code, is
1111 amended by adding Section 1701.269 to read as follows:
1212 Sec. 1701.269. TRAINING PROGRAM RELATING TO COUNTY JAILER
1313 INTERACTIONS WITH PERSONS WITH INTELLECTUAL OR DEVELOPMENTAL
1414 DISABILITIES. (a) The commission and the Commission on Jail
1515 Standards shall jointly develop a training program for county
1616 jailers that consists of at least four hours of education and
1717 training on interacting with a person with an intellectual or
1818 developmental disability who is confined in a county jail,
1919 including techniques to assess a person for an intellectual or
2020 developmental disability.
2121 (b) A county jailer who completes the training program may
2222 count the hours toward the jailer's continuing education
2323 requirements under this chapter.
2424 SECTION 2. Not later than January 1, 2022, the Texas
2525 Commission on Law Enforcement shall develop the training program
2626 required by Section 1701.269, Occupations Code, as added by this
2727 Act.
2828 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2021.
