66 AN ACT
77 relating to curriculum requirements in American and Texas history
88 at institutions of higher education.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Section 51.302(b), Education Code, is amended to
1111 read as follows:
1212 (b) Except as provided by Subsection (c), a college or
1313 university receiving state support or state aid from public funds
1414 may not grant a baccalaureate degree or a lesser degree or academic
1515 certificate to any person unless the person has credit for six
1616 semester hours or its equivalent from survey courses in American
1717 History. A student is entitled to submit as much as three semester
1818 hours of credit or its equivalent from survey courses in Texas
1919 History in partial satisfaction of this requirement. The college
2020 or university may determine that a student has satisfied this
2121 requirement in whole or part on the basis of credit granted to the
2222 student by the college or university for a substantially equivalent
2323 survey course completed at another accredited college or
2424 university, or on the basis of the student's successful completion
2525 of an advanced standing examination administered on the conditions
2626 and under the circumstances common for the college or university's
2727 advanced standing examinations. The college or university may
2828 grant as much as three semester hours of credit or its equivalent
2929 toward satisfaction of this requirement for substantially
3030 equivalent work completed by a student in the program of an approved
3131 senior R.O.T.C. unit.
3232 SECTION 2. The changes in law made by this Act apply only to
3333 the curriculum requirements established for a degree or certificate
3434 program offered by an institution of higher education beginning
3535 with undergraduate students who initially enroll in the institution
3636 for the 2022 fall semester.
3737 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2021.
