95 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
106 AN ACT
117 relating to excused absences from public school for certain
128 students to visit a professional's workplace for a career
139 investigation day.
1410 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1511 SECTION 1. Section 25.087, Education Code, is amended by
1612 adding Subsection (b-8) and amending Subsection (d) to read as
1713 follows:
1814 (b-8) A school district may excuse a student from attending
1915 school for a career investigation day to visit a professional at the
2016 professional's workplace during the student's junior and senior
2117 years of high school for the purpose of determining the student's
2218 interest in pursuing a career in the professional's field, provided
2319 that:
2420 (1) the district may not excuse for this purpose more
2521 than two days during the student's junior year and two days during
2622 the student's senior year; and
2723 (2) the district adopts:
2824 (A) a policy to determine when an absence may be
2925 excused for this purpose; and
3026 (B) a procedure to verify that the student's
3127 visit at the professional's workplace did occur.
3228 (d) A student whose absence is excused under Subsection (b),
3329 (b-1), (b-2), (b-4), (b-5), (b-8), or (c) may not be penalized for
3430 that absence and shall be counted as if the student attended school
3531 for purposes of calculating the average daily attendance of
3632 students in the school district. A student whose absence is excused
3733 under Subsection (b), (b-1), (b-2), (b-4), (b-5), (b-8), or (c)
3834 shall be allowed a reasonable time to make up school work missed on
3935 those days. If the student satisfactorily completes the school
4036 work, the day of absence shall be counted as a day of compulsory
4137 attendance.
4238 SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2021-2022
4339 school year.
4440 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
4541 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
4642 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
4743 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
4844 Act takes effect September 1, 2021.
