| 14 | 10 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 15 | 11 | | SECTION 1. Section 25.087, Education Code, is amended by |
|---|
| 16 | 12 | | adding Subsection (b-8) and amending Subsection (d) to read as |
|---|
| 17 | 13 | | follows: |
|---|
| 18 | 14 | | (b-8) A school district may excuse a student from attending |
|---|
| 19 | 15 | | school for a career investigation day to visit a professional at the |
|---|
| 20 | 16 | | professional's workplace during the student's junior and senior |
|---|
| 21 | 17 | | years of high school for the purpose of determining the student's |
|---|
| 22 | 18 | | interest in pursuing a career in the professional's field, provided |
|---|
| 23 | 19 | | that: |
|---|
| 24 | 20 | | (1) the district may not excuse for this purpose more |
|---|
| 25 | 21 | | than two days during the student's junior year and two days during |
|---|
| 26 | 22 | | the student's senior year; and |
|---|
| 27 | 23 | | (2) the district adopts: |
|---|
| 28 | 24 | | (A) a policy to determine when an absence may be |
|---|
| 29 | 25 | | excused for this purpose; and |
|---|
| 30 | 26 | | (B) a procedure to verify that the student's |
|---|
| 31 | 27 | | visit at the professional's workplace did occur. |
|---|
| 32 | 28 | | (d) A student whose absence is excused under Subsection (b), |
|---|
| 33 | 29 | | (b-1), (b-2), (b-4), (b-5), (b-8), or (c) may not be penalized for |
|---|
| 34 | 30 | | that absence and shall be counted as if the student attended school |
|---|
| 35 | 31 | | for purposes of calculating the average daily attendance of |
|---|
| 36 | 32 | | students in the school district. A student whose absence is excused |
|---|
| 37 | 33 | | under Subsection (b), (b-1), (b-2), (b-4), (b-5), (b-8), or (c) |
|---|
| 38 | 34 | | shall be allowed a reasonable time to make up school work missed on |
|---|
| 39 | 35 | | those days. If the student satisfactorily completes the school |
|---|
| 40 | 36 | | work, the day of absence shall be counted as a day of compulsory |
|---|
| 41 | 37 | | attendance. |
|---|
| 42 | 38 | | SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2021-2022 |
|---|
| 43 | 39 | | school year. |
|---|
| 44 | 40 | | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|---|
| 45 | 41 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|---|
| 46 | 42 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|---|
| 47 | 43 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|---|
| 48 | 44 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2021. |
