44 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
55 AN ACT
66 relating to science curriculum in public schools.
77 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
88 SECTION 1. Section 28.002(a), Education Code, is amended to
99 read as follows:
1010 (a) Each school district that offers kindergarten through
1111 grade 12 shall offer, as a required curriculum:
1212 (1) a foundation curriculum that includes:
1313 (A) English language arts;
1414 (B) mathematics;
1515 (C) science; and, including the long-term
1616 problem of human-caused climate change and its effects, and
1717 bioregionalism, which allows us to understand our reliance on the
1818 places we live and to appreciate the plant and animal ecosystems,
1919 the watersheds, the landforms and the human cultures connected to
2020 these regions; and
2121 (D) social studies, consisting of Texas, United
2222 States, and world history, government, economics, with emphasis on
2323 the free enterprise system and its benefits, and geography; and
2424 (2) an enrichment curriculum that includes:
2525 (A) to the extent possible, languages other than
2626 English;
2727 (B) health, with emphasis on the importance of
2828 proper nutrition and exercise;
2929 (C) physical education;
3030 (D) fine arts;
3131 (E) career and technology education;
3232 (F) technology applications;
3333 (G) religious literature, including the Hebrew
3434 Scriptures (Old Testament) and New Testament, and its impact on
3535 history and literature; and
3636 (H) personal financial literacy.
3737 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
3838 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
3939 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
4040 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
4141 Act takes effect September 1, 2021.
