| 7 | 7 | | relating to instruction in positive character traits in public |

| 9 | 9 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 10 | 10 | | SECTION 1. Section 29.906(b), Education Code, is amended to |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | read as follows: |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | (b) The State Board of Education must include the following |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | positive character traits: |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | (1) courage; |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | (2) trustworthiness, including honesty, reliability, |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | punctuality, and loyalty; |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | (3) integrity; |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | (4) respect and courtesy; |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | (5) responsibility, including accountability, |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | diligence, perseverance, and self-control; |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | (6) fairness, including justice, [and] freedom from |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | prejudice, and the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion; |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | (7) caring, including kindness, empathy, compassion, |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | consideration, patience, generosity, and charity; |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | (8) good citizenship, including patriotism, concern |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | for the common good and the community, and respect for authority and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | the law; |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | (9) school pride; and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | (10) gratitude. |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2021-2022 |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | school year. |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2021. |
