55 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
66 AN ACT
77 relating to the hours of instruction required for driver training.
88 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
99 SECTION 1. Section 1001.101(b), Education Code, is amended
1010 to read as follows:
1111 (b) A driver education course must require the student to
1212 complete:
1313 (1) 7 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction in the
1414 presence of a person who holds a driver education instructor
1515 license or who meets the requirements for a driver education course
1616 conducted by a parent or other individual under Section 1001.112;
1717 (2) 7 hours of observation instruction in the presence
1818 of a person who holds a driver education instructor license or who
1919 meets the requirements for a driver education course conducted by a
2020 parent or other individual under Section 1001.112; and
2121 (3) 50 [30] hours of behind-the-wheel instruction,
2222 including at least 10 hours of instruction that takes place at
2323 night, in the presence of an adult who meets the requirements of
2424 Section 521.222(d)(2), Transportation Code.
2525 SECTION 2. The change in law made by this Act applies to a
2626 driver education course that begins on or after the effective date
2727 of this Act. A driver education course that begins before the
2828 effective date of this Act is governed by the law in effect on the
2929 date the course began, and the former law is continued in effect for
3030 that purpose.
3131 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2021.
