4 | 9 | | HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION |
---|
5 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Type 1.5 diabetes, also known as latent autoimmune |
---|
6 | 11 | | diabetes, often receives less attention than other types of |
---|
7 | 12 | | diabetes, yet those affected by the disease face significant health |
---|
8 | 13 | | risks; and |
---|
9 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Like other forms of diabetes, type 1.5 is a chronic |
---|
10 | 15 | | disorder that impairs the body's ability to process blood sugar, |
---|
11 | 16 | | which can lead to severe complications without medical |
---|
12 | 17 | | intervention; type 1.5 is often considered to be a subgroup of type |
---|
13 | 18 | | 1 diabetes and, like type 1, it occurs when the pancreas fails to |
---|
14 | 19 | | produce an adequate supply of insulin; and |
---|
15 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Type 1.5 diabetes is slow progressing, typically |
---|
16 | 21 | | developing over a period of a few months to several years; it |
---|
17 | 22 | | primarily affects adults above age 30, in contrast to type 1, which |
---|
18 | 23 | | usually first appears during childhood or adolescence; the pancreas |
---|
19 | 24 | | of a patient with type 1.5 will eventually lose the ability to |
---|
20 | 25 | | produce insulin entirely, requiring reliance on insulin |
---|
21 | 26 | | injections; and |
---|
22 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Treatment of type 1.5 diabetes is often complicated |
---|
23 | 28 | | by misdiagnosis, with the disease frequently being mistaken for the |
---|
24 | 29 | | more common type 2 diabetes; this delays proper care and increases |
---|
25 | 30 | | the risk of long-term complications; medications and lifestyle |
---|
26 | 31 | | changes that are generally effective at treating type 2 do little to |
---|
27 | 32 | | help people with type 1.5, who often become dependent on insulin |
---|
28 | 33 | | therapy within five years of diagnosis; and |
---|
29 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Increasing public knowledge of type 1.5 diabetes can |
---|
30 | 35 | | help to ensure that more patients receive the timely care that they |
---|
31 | 36 | | need, and the observance of Type 1.5 Diabetes Awareness Day serves |
---|
32 | 37 | | to promote greater understanding of this serious condition; now, |
---|
33 | 38 | | therefore, be it |
---|
34 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the 87th Legislature of the State of Texas |
---|
35 | 40 | | hereby designate November 5 as Type 1.5 Diabetes Awareness Day; |
---|
36 | 41 | | and, be it further |
---|
37 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That, in accordance with the provisions of Section |
---|
38 | 43 | | 391.004(d), Government Code, this designation remain in effect |
---|
39 | 44 | | until the 10th anniversary of the date this resolution is finally |
---|
40 | 45 | | passed by the legislature. |
