49 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
510 WHEREAS, Type 1.5 diabetes, also known as latent autoimmune
611 diabetes, often receives less attention than other types of
712 diabetes, yet those affected by the disease face significant health
813 risks; and
914 WHEREAS, Like other forms of diabetes, type 1.5 is a chronic
1015 disorder that impairs the body's ability to process blood sugar,
1116 which can lead to severe complications without medical
1217 intervention; type 1.5 is often considered to be a subgroup of type
1318 1 diabetes and, like type 1, it occurs when the pancreas fails to
1419 produce an adequate supply of insulin; and
1520 WHEREAS, Type 1.5 diabetes is slow progressing, typically
1621 developing over a period of a few months to several years; it
1722 primarily affects adults above age 30, in contrast to type 1, which
1823 usually first appears during childhood or adolescence; the pancreas
1924 of a patient with type 1.5 will eventually lose the ability to
2025 produce insulin entirely, requiring reliance on insulin
2126 injections; and
2227 WHEREAS, Treatment of type 1.5 diabetes is often complicated
2328 by misdiagnosis, with the disease frequently being mistaken for the
2429 more common type 2 diabetes; this delays proper care and increases
2530 the risk of long-term complications; medications and lifestyle
2631 changes that are generally effective at treating type 2 do little to
2732 help people with type 1.5, who often become dependent on insulin
2833 therapy within five years of diagnosis; and
2934 WHEREAS, Increasing public knowledge of type 1.5 diabetes can
3035 help to ensure that more patients receive the timely care that they
3136 need, and the observance of Type 1.5 Diabetes Awareness Day serves
3237 to promote greater understanding of this serious condition; now,
3338 therefore, be it
3439 RESOLVED, That the 87th Legislature of the State of Texas
3540 hereby designate November 5 as Type 1.5 Diabetes Awareness Day;
3641 and, be it further
3742 RESOLVED, That, in accordance with the provisions of Section
3843 391.004(d), Government Code, this designation remain in effect
3944 until the 10th anniversary of the date this resolution is finally
4045 passed by the legislature.
