5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Rotary Club of Lubbock is celebrating its 100th |

6 | 7 | | anniversary in 2021, and this milestone in the organization's |

7 | 8 | | history truly merits special recognition; and |
---|
8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, On February 1, 1921, the Rotary Club was formally |
---|
9 | 10 | | established at the Merrill Hotel in Lubbock by District Governor |
---|
10 | 11 | | Lutcher Stark; one of the first service organizations in the city, |
---|
11 | 12 | | it was made up of 18 charter members under the leadership of |
---|
12 | 13 | | president Walter A. Myrick; over the years, the club has drawn its |
---|
13 | 14 | | membership from business and professional leaders from all echelons |
---|
14 | 15 | | of society, and some of the group's long-term members can boast up |
---|
15 | 16 | | to 60 years of service, all working together under Rotary |
---|
16 | 17 | | International's motto of "Service Above Self"; and |
---|
17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, The club's myriad contributions to the community |
---|
18 | 19 | | include helping to create Lubbock's first public library, providing |
---|
19 | 20 | | funding during the early years of Lubbock's schools, leading the |
---|
20 | 21 | | effort to establish Texas Technological College, and establishing |
---|
21 | 22 | | the Rotary Cerebral Palsy Treatment Center; the organization has |
---|
22 | 23 | | also provided more than $130,000 in student loans and granted many |
---|
23 | 24 | | Youth Leadership Awards and Scholarships, and it helped establish |
---|
24 | 25 | | the South Plains Food Bank, donating more than $30,000 each year, |
---|
25 | 26 | | for a total of over a million dollars; and |
---|
26 | 27 | | WHEREAS, In addition, the Rotary Club has lent its support to |
---|
27 | 28 | | the Lubbock Area Veterans War Memorial, Habitat for Humanity, the |
---|
28 | 29 | | George Elle South Plains Food Bank Apple Orchard, and the Breedlove |
---|
29 | 30 | | Food Dehydration Plant; moreover, it has partnered in Rotary |

30 | 31 | | International's efforts around the world to fund water projects, |
---|
31 | 32 | | advance education on every continent, and eradicate polio; and |
---|
32 | 33 | | WHEREAS, For the past century, members of the Rotary Club of |
---|
33 | 34 | | Lubbock have performed works of lasting benefit to the local |
---|
34 | 35 | | community and beyond, and the group's noteworthy achievements are a |
---|
35 | 36 | | tribute to the unwavering commitment of its members, both past and |
---|
36 | 37 | | present; now, therefore, be it |

37 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |

38 | 39 | | Legislature hereby congratulate the Rotary Club of Lubbock on its |

39 | 40 | | 100th anniversary and extend to all those associated with the club |
