5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The passing of Daniel B. Markson, a leader in the |

6 | 7 | | development of affordable housing, on May 4, 2019, at the age of 59, |

7 | 8 | | brought a great loss to his family, his friends, and the San Antonio |
---|
8 | 9 | | community; and |
---|
9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, The son of Gertrude and Morris Markson, Dan Markson |
---|
10 | 11 | | grew up in Boston, Massachusetts; he earned his bachelor's degree |
---|
11 | 12 | | in urban geography from Clark University and his MBA from Babson |
---|
12 | 13 | | College; from 1987 to 1997, he served as senior vice president of |
---|
13 | 14 | | Boston Capital, a multifamily housing investment company; he then |
---|
14 | 15 | | became a partner in Royal Castle Companies, which developed |
---|
15 | 16 | | affordable rental units in several states, including Texas; and |
---|
16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Markson joined The NRP Group and cofounded its |
---|
17 | 18 | | Texas office in 2003, serving as executive vice president of |
---|
18 | 19 | | development; with his guidance, the company completed more than |
---|
19 | 20 | | 8,000 apartments in the Alamo City; he balanced the construction of |
---|
20 | 21 | | affordable housing units with high-profile market-rate projects, |
---|
21 | 22 | | among them, the Cevallos Lofts and Tobin Lofts, and he forged |
---|
22 | 23 | | partnerships between NRP and the San Antonio Housing Trust Public |
---|
23 | 24 | | Facility Corporation and the San Antonio Housing Authority; |
---|
24 | 25 | | committed to the advancement of low-income families, Mr. Markson |
---|
25 | 26 | | implemented the Homework First after-school program and other |
---|
26 | 27 | | supportive services, and he organized annual field trips for |
---|
27 | 28 | | children to the State Capitol; highly respected by his peers, he |
---|
28 | 29 | | held leadership roles with the National Association of Home |
---|
29 | 30 | | Builders, the Texas Association of Builders, and the Texas |
---|
30 | 31 | | Association of Affordable Housing Providers; and |
---|
31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Markson benefited the wider community through |
---|
32 | 33 | | his efforts in behalf of a number of organizations, including the |
---|
33 | 34 | | César E. Chávez Legacy & Educational Foundation; he served on the |
---|
34 | 35 | | boards of Jewish Family Service San Antonio and Temple Beth-El, and |
---|
35 | 36 | | in 2018 he received the Distinguished Community Service Award from |
---|
36 | 37 | | the Chabad Center for Jewish Life & Learning; he was devoted above |
---|
37 | 38 | | all to his son, Maury John Markson; and |
---|
38 | 39 | | WHEREAS, A visionary in his field, Dan Markson improved the |
---|
39 | 40 | | living circumstances of countless Texans and left a lasting imprint |
---|
40 | 41 | | on San Antonio, and his tremendous warmth, kindness, and dedication |
---|
41 | 42 | | are greatly missed; now, therefore, be it |
---|
42 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |
---|
43 | 44 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Daniel B. Markson and |
---|
44 | 45 | | extend sincere sympathy to all who mourn his passing; and, be it |

45 | 46 | | further |

46 | 47 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
