| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Ricardo "Cuate" Santos retired as chief |

| 7 | 8 | | drawing to a close an exceptional career with the newspaper that |

| 8 | 9 | | spanned nearly four decades; and |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Greatly admired for his artistry and skill, Cuate |

| 10 | 11 | | Santos has captured the essence of the border town in which he was |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | born and raised, documenting myriad civic, sports, and political |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | events; over the years, his assignments have included photographing |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | high-profile athletes and political figures, including Mexican and |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | U.S. presidents, and such events as the Jalapeño Festival; a |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | self-taught photographer who never took a formal class, he mastered |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | lighting and composition early on, and his images have appeared in a |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | number of prestigious national and international publications; and |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Santos graduated from Martin High School and |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | went on to attend Laredo Junior College, where he began his work as |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | a photographer with the McIntosh Express; he joined the staff of the |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | Laredo Morning Times in the early 1980s; he was recently recognized |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | by the Webb County Commissioners Court for his many years of |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | dedicated service to the region; and |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Retirement will afford Mr. Santos more time to spend |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | with his family, which includes his wife, Norma, his daughters, |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | Andrea and Amanda, and his granddaughters, Olivia and Eva; he also |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | plans to volunteer more in the community and to continue |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | photographing Laredo; and |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Known for his professionalism, his low-key manner, |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | and his good humor, Cuate Santos has chronicled the lives of his |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | fellow residents for 39 years, and in so doing, he has created a |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | rich and compelling visual record of life in South Texas; now, |

| 33 | 34 | | therefore, be it |

| 34 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |

| 35 | 36 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Ricardo "Cuate" Santos on his |

| 36 | 37 | | retirement as chief photographer for the Laredo Morning Times and |

| 37 | 38 | | extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
